Minneapolis condo residents want vibration study before Southwest light rail goes forward

Two years ago, construction began on a new apartment building on West Lake Street in Minneapolis where the former Tryg’s restaurant once stood, a little more than 150 feet from the Calhoun-Isles condominiums.

Vibrations from construction caused cracks in the walls of a condo tower in the bucolic complex off Dean Court, former grain elevators built during Minneapolis’ milling heyday in the early 20th century, and retrofitted in the 1980s for residential use.

A new pain point for Southwest Light Rail: BNSF insists on a wall

Planners of the Southwest Light Rail project still haven't sorted out the legal challenges facing the $1.9 billion project in the Minneapolis lakes area, but now there's a new worry: A 10-foot-high, mile-long concrete wall running through Minneapolis that was quickly approved this week.

The Southwest light-rail project is poised to take an important step forward this week after the Metropolitan Council negotiated a series of agreements with railroad companies that will permit LRT and freight rail to operate along much of the same corridor.

The agreements with BNSF Railway and Twin Cities & Western Railroad, plus a pact reached earlier this year with Canadian Pacific Railway, mean the beleaguered project can apply for $929 million in federal funding sometime this fall. The deal calls for the council to pay the railroads $58.6 million to pay for, among other items, property acquisition and construction in the corridor.

The $1.9 billion Southwest project will connect downtown Minneapolis to Eden Prairie,  .  .  .

The Metropolitan Council on Monday reached agreements with BNSF Railway Co. and the Twin Cities & Western Railroad to permit light-rail operations along the same corridor as freight operations.

The pacts will enable the council to begin seeking federal funding for its planned $1.9 billion Southwest light-rail project, the Star Tribune reported earlier this week.
