September 24, 2004 Hurricane Ivan Recovery
Recovery from Hurricane Ivan continues in Alabama, Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle. The Pensacola area was hardest hit, with major damage to track, bridges and signals. Rail operations are suspended in the area, as six miles of track and eight bridges undergo major repairs.
Limited local service has been restored between Flomaton, Ala., and Pensacola, Fla., and between Milton, Fla., and Chattahoochee. Limited service has also been restored between New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., and between Mobile and Montgomery, with restrictions because of commercial power outages.
New Orleans interchange to and from western rail carriers is limited, and temporary rerouting has been established through Memphis, Tenn., East St. Louis, Ill., and Birmingham, Ala.
Traffic destined for or originating from locations between Pensacola/Goulding, Fla., to Chattahoochee remains embargoed.
Amtrak service that originates in New Orleans and goes east remains suspended until further notice.
Hurricane Jeanne Preparations
Hurricane Jeanne is projected to make landfall near Melbourne, Fla., on Sunday morning, Sept. 26, then advance in a northerly direction through central and eastern Florida Monday, and on to Georgia and the Carolinas Tuesday.
Ballast trains are currently staged at various locations near Hamlet, N.C., Baldwin, Fla., and Augusta, Ga. Generators, chain saws and other equipment have been staged throughout the region, and private contractors are on call to help with removal of debris and restoration of CSXT lines in the aftermath of the storm.
Signal teams are on hand to remove and secure highway rail crossing gates Friday and Saturday, which will initiate suspension of rail traffic along routes in Hurricane Jeanne’s projected path.
Amtrak will continue to monitor the storm and will announce any changes to their service plan on Friday, Sept. 24.
All precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of our employees, customers, and the public with minimum delay to shipments as we continue to monitor the progress of this storm.

CSX Intermodal Prepares for Hurricane Jeanne:
Hurricane Jeanne is approaching Florida's East Coast and is expected to make landfall late Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. Forecasters currently predict the storm will move northward after landfall along Florida's East Coast and into Georgia and the Carolina's before moving back over the Atlantic Ocean. In preparation for the storm, CSX Intermodal will close all inbound gates across our network to traffic destined to Florida at 00:01 Sunday morning. Traffic that is already at these terminals billed to Florida or tendered for movement on Saturday may not depart until after the threat of the storm has passed and CSXI has been able to resume service to all Florida locations. The Florida East Coast Railway has issued an embargo on all traffic beginning at midnight tonight. CSXI will not be interchanging any traffic to the FEC in Jacksonville until after the storm has moved through the area.
CSXI's Orlando terminal will close its gates at 16:00 on Saturday and will not re-open until the storm has passed and the terminal is inspected and safe. CSXI's Tampa terminal is not expected to be shut down at this time. Normal operating hours will be observed unless the forecast path of the storm changes. In Jacksonville, CSXI's terminal plans to close at 00:30 on Sunday morning.
CSXI's Savannah and Charleston terminals have no plans to close at this time. Further updates will be issued if those plans change. The Savannah Port plans to close at 21:00 Sunday night.
Depending on the path of the storm and when it moves through Florida, CSX Intermodal's Corporate Offices in Jacksonville may not be able to open on Monday. Plans are to have normal Saturday and Sunday operations and staffing at this time. Additional Fast Facts notifications will be issued throughout the weekend, as conditions warrant.
