The article doe not say why the naysayers are against LRT. Maybe Evergreen can shed some light on the issue.

One prominent group, however favors it. Vancouver architects (Vancouver AIA) have long-supported LRT, especially the cross river connection to Tri-Met. They know that LRT brings economic development; hence, more business for architects.

They're against it for the usual reasons, mostly erroneous ones. Things like, "the criminals will ride it to steal my 52 inch plasma TV, it'll cost too much (even though trains are cheaper than buses), they fear something new, and so on.
Alan,

Take care and take trains!

Vancouver is an interesting part of Washington. Hard to fund transit in Clark County because of it's proximity to Oregon. They also have had some voters that have backed interesting people. They used to be represented by a hard-core Republican, Linda Smith, until she got ambitious, challenged Senator Murray and lost. They also are backers of the initiative king, Tim Eyman, although he has been having trouble with his anti-red light camera initiative(it's only for his hometown of Mukilteo). One thing Vancouver could use is a name change, possibly to Fort Vancouver, to avoid confusion with that big city in BC along the Fraser. Things do change though. There were some that, after previous attempts to get things done, never thought the events of last July would happen here in Seattle.

I am disappointed that the architects association (AIA Washington), long time proponents of LRT, has not jumped into this discussion to bolster the letter writer's Charlotte LRT experience.

Aha! There is hope after all for a trans-Columbia River LRT crossing! :)

Sloan

A group of light-rail opponents who have been working for more than two years to petition the Vancouver City Council for a public vote on light rail enjoyed a short-lived victory this week, after City Attorney Ted Gathe said their latest effort had been successful.

By the next day, however, the petition had been ruled invalid by the county.
