Wyoming Tribune Eagle via Gillette (WY) News Record, 4/28/19:

Big Boy steam locomotive almost ready for its big day

CHEYENNE — The story of Cheyenne is impossible to tell without also telling the story of the railroad. The tracks that cut through town are more than just the lifeblood of the country’s economy; they were the genesis of Cheyenne’s entire existence.

SNIP

A big piece of that history will be rolling out of Cheyenne next Saturday as Union Pacific unveils its newly rebuilt Big Boy steam engine. Big Boy 4014, along with UP’s Living Legend 844 steam engine, will head west on the tracks as part of the company’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.

As part of the celebration, local and state leaders will come to the Cheyenne Depot to see Big Boy 4014 and Living Legend 844 off on the five-day journey to Ogden. For years, Visit Cheyenne has been getting massive interest globally about the Big Boy and its upcoming debut, Rudloff said.

Rare Aerial Footage of the 4014 Big Boy on its first run outside the yard

Published on May 3, 2019

Here is RAW unedited aerial footage of the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014.

The original video is in 2.7K. This version is 720. It was 2:00 in the morning when I was dealing with all this and didn't have time to use my other editing software which can process 2.7K.

We plan to post a shorter edited version (in 2.7K) in the near future but thought all the foamers and Rail Fans might enjoy seeing this.

If you want to see the 4014 up close then fast forward to the middle of the video. This video was shot at 8:00 PM and darkness was quickly approaching.

This is the largest locomotive in the world and this is his first trip outside the UP Steam Shop. This is the only Big Boy still in operation.

This video was shot on 5/2/2019

All of this footage was 100% legal. All FAA laws were followed and none of the footage was shot within the restricted airspace which covers most of Cheyenne WY.

Union Pacific Steam Club Update No. 7 - May 3, 2019

If you don't already know by now, the Big Boy No. 4014 left the Union Pacific Steam Shop on its own power May 1, and has been undergoing last-minute road testing before its big christening event at 9:30 a.m. MT May 4. After the champagne bottle breaks, No. 4014 and the Living Legend No. 844 will double-head on a short whistle-stop tour to Ogden, Utah, where they'll meet nose-to-nose during Union Pacific's Golden Spike celebration at 10 a.m. MT May 9.

Safety Reminder

Now is a good time to remind you of the importance of safety when trackside.

Remember, the average train overhangs the track by at least three feet and wider loads can extend even further from the tracks. It is imperative that you stand back at least 25 feet or more from the tracks to avoid debris and steam or being hit by the train itself.

Some more safety reminders:

  • Trains can't stop quickly to avoid people or vehicles on the tracks.
  • Railroad tracks, trestles, yards and right-of-way are private property – please do not trespass.
  • Never assume tracks are abandoned or inactive – ALWAYS expect a train and assume tracks are active.
  • Look both ways when approaching railroad crossings, and stop for trains. A train's distance from you -- and its speed -- can be deceiving.
  • Look twice at crossings with multiple tracks. Two tracks may mean two trains, so make sure all tracks are clear before crossing each rail line.
  • Avoid distractions including loud music, texting and talking on cell phones. Look up and listen for train horns.

When taking photos or video, be mindful of your surroundings. Make sure you're in a safe place or have someone "spot" you while you're looking through your camera's viewfinder. What you don't see could hurt you.

You Are Our Safety Ambassadors

As a Steam Club member and rail fan, you're more aware of the dangers associated with train operations than your typical neighbor who may be trackside for the first time. Because of your knowledge, we're asking you to have the courage to tell someone if what they're doing is unsafe – whether they're standing on or too close to the tracks, running along the ballast, leaving trip hazards in walkways or climbing on equipment.

You can help us and the UP steam program by spreading a message of safety or by reporting unsafe behavior to anyone with a yellow Union Pacific badge. When it comes to safety, we're all on watch to make sure we all go home safe to our families.

Inside Track and Celebration Page

Yesterday we published an Inside Track story at UP.com that highlights all the upcoming #Transcon150 celebration activities including the No. 4014 christening, the May 9 Ogden celebration and the Utah Spike 150 events. Read it here.

We also published a #Transcon150 Celebration page that includes the May 9 Celebration program and a list of handy links to pages with #Transcon150 event information. Read it here.

#Transcon150

May 9 Ceremonies to be Streamed Live via Facebook

Can't make it to Ogden for the big events May 9? That's OK, we've got you covered.

Union Pacific will be streaming May 9 ceremonies live via the UP Facebook page, located at http://www.facebook.com/unionpacific . If you haven't already "liked" our Facebook page, do it today. You'll be notified as soon as the cameras start rolling.

May 10 events taking place at Promontory will not be streamed live on UP's Facebook page, but will be available via other online outlets.

Tracking The Big Boy and Living Legend

We've made it easy for you to know where the pride of Union Pacific's steam program is located at all times.

Our Steam Locomotive Tracking map traces our steam locomotives' location. The location is continuously updated when the train is on the move.

You can also track the steam giants via the UP Steam Twitter page at http://twitter.com/up_steam. The account tweets the train's location as it changes.

You can find both the map and Twitter feed, along with steam schedule information at upsteam.com.

That's all for now. Be safe, and we'll see you trackside,

Thanks, and be safe!

Union Pacific Steam Club

Union Pacific 4014 Departing Cheyenne May 2, 2019 in 4K

5/3/19

First time in 60 years a Big Boy Departs Cheyenne, Wyoming! Please Enjoy in 4k Thanks for watching. I got the backing on to the main line on the east side of the yard. But after the 1st service stop the crossing had no parking at sundown. But happened to be westbound on Lincoln Way when this went down. Not the best but try to enjoy a 4k video of the inaugural run of the Big Boy crossing the city limits for the 1st time in 60 years. Thanks for watching my videos.

Jalopnik, 5/3/19:

Here's the Biggest Steam Engine in the World Going on a Test Run For the First Time in Nearly 60 Years

Union Pacific 4014, also known as the one of the only 25 Big Boys ever built and only eight still in existence, is now officially the only one running in the world. Earlier we heard it blow its whistle for the first time since 1962, and yesterday evening it went for its first test run under its own power for the first time in 57 years. And weighing in at over a million pounds, it is now officially the largest running steam engine in the world.

Each Big Boy wasn’t just designed to be large, weighing as much as 1,200,000 pounds, as an aesthetic thing. They were so big because they were enormously powerful, as Railway Age noted in a story about UP4014 when it was first announced that it would be restored:

Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific by the American Locomotive Company (Alco) between 1941 and 1944, in two groups of ten and one of five. All burned coal, with large, 150-square-foot grates to burn the low-quality Wyoming coal from mines owned by the railroad. They were designed to pull long, heavy freight trains (maximum rated tonnage of 4,040 tons) at a sustained speed of 60 mph once past the Wasatch Range mountain grades on UP’s main line between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne. Peak horsepower was reached at about 35 mph; optimal tractive effort at about 10 mph.

Using nothing but the power of fire and boiling water, it produced 6,300 horsepower when new.

SNIP

The plan is to drive the Big Boy from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ogden, Utah, starting tomorrow for a five-day journey to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad in the United States.

Continue here w/additional video clips.

Bringing the Big Boy Back to Life

Published on May 5, 2019

When it came time to decide how to celebrate the anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike, nothing could compare to bringing back the Big Boy No. 4014. More than five years after the project began, the Big Boy was christened in Cheyenne, WY, May 4, 2019.

Railway Age, 5/9/19:

Requiem For a Heavyweight

bigboy4014.jpg

FROM THE EDITOR, MAY 2019 - By the time you read this, the largest steam locomotive ever built will have thundered her way from Union Pacific’s Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyo., to Ogden, Utah, to take part in ceremonies marking the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike, which completed the nation’s first transcontinental railroad.

I’m talking about the locomotive that graces this month’s cover: “Big Boy” 4014, built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Co. to UP specifications for hauling heavy trains over the Wasatch Mountains between Ogden and Green River, Wyo., on a 1.14% ruling grade.

SNIP

We salute Union Pacific, its Steam Team, and all suppliers, past and present, who returned 4014 to glory.
