Expert: If Nashville builds light rail, city could 'hover at the edge of bankruptcy forever'

James Moore, director of transportation engineering with the University of Southern California, argues that cities focused on building light rail rather than bus rapid-transit systems are not only costing themselves millions of dollars, they are also pouring money into a system that won't prove popular with riders.

Sorry, you must be a subscriber to get rest of story; but maybe some of this board's members from Nashville can provide additional information.

I have, however, reviewed Professor Moore's vitae, and he is a brilliant scholar.  That said, he is also in the hip pocket of the anti-rail organization The Reason Foundation.  <_<  Sloan

Rail, downtown tunnel part of Nashville's $5.2 billion transit plan

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A $5.2 billion proposal to build an extensive transit system in Tennessee's booming capital city would introduce light rail and carve out an underground tunnel downtown, Nashville Mayor Megan Barry announced Tuesday.

At a news conference, Barry unveiled details of her plan that would feature more than 25 miles (40 kilometers) of light rail, additional bus service and the tunnel. The ambitious project would hinge on a package of tax increases that the mayor wants to put before voters in May.

"We are not going to pave our way out of traffic jams with wider roads, and we're not going to stop growth," Barry said at a news conference Tuesday. "But we can do something to manage growth, and we can make sure it benefits everyone."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 10/18/17:

Nashville – an Atlanta competitor – ups the ante on transit investment

Metro Atlanta political leaders are beginning to sing the same song in support of mass transit. But the region’s economic competitors are not standing back to watch.

On Tuesday Nashville Mayor Megan Barry unveiled a $5.2 billion mass transit plan. According to The Tennessean, it would include 26 miles of new light rail lines, better bus service and a massive tunnel below downtown for transit lines.

SNIP

Amazon’s search for a new corporate headquarters has highlighted the role of mass transit in economic development. The company says it must have access to mass transit – and some political leaders fear parts of metro Atlanta that have resisted transit will be out of the running for Amazon and other top corporate prizes.
