NBC Washington, 11/29/17:

Woman Says She Asked Man to Move on Escalator, He Punched Her

Termia Logan says she asked a man to step aside on an escalator in Union Station so she could pass and he punched her in the face.

Logan told News4 she had just reached the top of an escalator in the station on Tuesday when a man turned around and punched her, leaving her bleeding and with a black eye.

Then, she said Amtrak police did little to help.

Not saying anyone should take sides here, but in Washington, DC it is expected that one will keep to the right side of the escalator if they are simply riding, but if moving, using the escalator as a stairway to bypass those standing still, those people must keep to the left.  It has nothing to do with political philosophies or parties. It's just an age old protocol that Washingtonians know well, and visitors if they don't they get a very quick lesson on it to keep right if not moving.  This goes for any escalator in the city (and maybe the area), whether it's the escalator in a Metro station or a mall or anything else.
