Commuter rail seems almost ready to roll

One of Marin County’s most anticipated — and controversial — projects seems to be just about ready for its official unveiling.

All aboard for SMART train ‘soft launch’

Fred Codoni stepped onto the shiny new Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit car Wednesday, plopped down in a reclining seat and gazed out tinted, plate-glass windows at a sight not seen by North Bay rail passengers in almost 60 years.

SMART train launches North Bay preview, but opening still unclear

Fred Codoni, who knows a smooth ride when he feels one, was impressed by the lack of clatter as he zipped along Wednesday on the newest railroad in the Bay Area, a diesel-powered passenger train that is slated to become the first commuter service in the North Bay in nearly 60 years.

The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) project yesterday began a series of "preview rides" to offer locals a chance to try the new rail system.

The preview trips will continue July 1 and 4. On those days, SMART will offer three trips each.

SMART train offers more free preview rides for public

The public is getting more opportunities to get a free ride on the new SMART train.

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit officials added additional free train rides between the Santa Rosa airport and the San Rafael stations as part of the “soft launch” of the new commuter rail system.

North Bay’s SMART commuter rail system to roll after long delays

When voters approved a $450 million commuter train system for the North Bay in 2008, and when shovels hit the ground a little more than three years later in a ceremony in Petaluma, no one anticipated it would take quite this long to turn tax dollars into transit service.

But after more than two years of delays, leaders of the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit System, known as SMART, say they’re not only close to opening but are moving to build out a network that could have a profound impact on the region’s residents, its job centers and its growing tourism.

Article

This echoes what I have been saying about it being a train to nowhere, if people still need to transfer to & from buses (the same buses it is supposed to replace) to get anywhere outside of Sonoma & Marin Counties (including San Francisco).  The well used ferry at Larkspur won't initially have rail service, which will according to this article remain tantalizingly 2.2 miles away until 2019.
