Question: what lines are not operating on holidays.

 

GO TRANSIT runs on a Saturday schedule on Canada Day, July 1st.   That means that the commuter lines that run middays on weekdays only will not be in service all day.

Still no formal announcement but hopefully getting close.  Because of the downtown hotel rates being what they are, staying in both Toronto and Montreal is just not viable.  I hadn't even considered yet the cost of VIA Rail, between the two cities.  Instead, this can still be a good 6-day event involving Toronto area only (Maple Leaf in both directions), and including stopovers in both directions at yet undecided points in New York State (unless you want to ride the 12+ hour Maple Leaf trip straight through to or from New York City).

One caution about travel to Canada for those on Medicare. Basic Medicare coverage is domestic only and does not include coverage outside the US with rare exceptions. For those with Medicare supplement coverage (Medigap) or a Medicare Advantage all-inclusive plan, some include coverage for short-term international travel with varying deductibles and co-pays, and some provide no coverage. If you do not have Medigap or Medicare Advantage, or if your Medigap or Medicare Advantage plan does not include international travel coverage, you should buy short-term health insurance coverage even for just a day or two in Canada. Stuff happens.

 

This caution also applies to non-Medicare private health insurance. Be sure you are covered before you cross the border.
