Democrat and Chronicle, Rochester, NY, 8/21:

Between rock and hard place: Trucks and rail bridges

Nearly once a week, a delivery truck or tractor-trailer gets stuck under a railroad bridge somewhere in Monroe County. It can be a sight to see.

"It's crazy. It peels the top right back like a tin can," said Tim Jones, a State Farm insurance agent whose office is adjacent to a Perinton railroad bridge that bears visible scars of numerous truck collisions and wedge jobs.

"There was one time when a guy was driving by with a shipment of cars and he tore the top off of, I think, a (Toyota) Tundra. Twice I've seen cars completely destroyed on car carriers," Jones said.

In this day and age of ever-present data and pinpoint-accurate navigation systems, you'd think this wouldn't happen. But it does. In fact, GPS navigation systems may contribute to the problem, as we shall see.

The Wall Street Journal, 1/9:

The Joys of Watching a Bridge Shave the Tops Off Trucks

A North Carolina span shaves the tops off tall trucks; ‘crash art’ for sale

DURHAM, N.C.—A height sensor on the street detected impending doom here last month. Yellow lights began flashing a block away.

The danger: A Budget rental truck barging down the road wasn’t going to get under the railroad overpass.

The truck ignored the warning. It rumbled underneath. Its roof did not.

The train bridge’s underside trimmed a layer off the truck’s top, looking like a grater shaving a layer of cheese.

Very hungry canopener bridge defeats fancy, new warning system

In May, the Dept. of Transportation installed a very nice LED blank-out warning sign at the 11foot8 bridge. The new sign is combined with a traffic light that stops traffic when an overheight truck approaches. Yet, when the bridge is hungry, it will eat. Watch as the canopener lures in an unsuspecting moving truck and chews up the roof.

The "high-tech" overheight vehicle detection system fails again!

Speeding truck runs light and pops a wheelie at the 11foot8 bridge

On Sept 18, the driver of this rental truck ignored the 25 MpH speed limit and all low-clearance warnings only to provide a solid meal for our hungry canopener. The impact was so powerful that the truck popped a wheelie and tore off the entire roof, before getting jammed under the trestle.

Police closed Gregson St for a short while until the debris was removed. Then they re-opened the right lane. The truck was stuck under the trestle for about an hour until a tow truck was able to winch it out from its predicament.

The Piedmont train, which runs between Charlotte and Raleigh, was also delayed by this incident. Apparently the conductor announced on the train that the “canopener” bridge in Durham was hit again, and that the old trestle would have to inspected before the train could cross.

Truck runs light and rips off roof at the 11foot8 bridge

Another red-light runner last weekend tried to beat the light and got badly beaten up by the canopener bridge. This crash happened last Saturday, but I did not notice until a co-worker pointed out the debris to me this morning (Thanks, Gordon!).

EDIT: the driver came back later and removed the debris from the road.

Secret military equipment gets banged up at the 11foot8 bridge

Published on Mar 18, 2018

Not even the U.S. military can sneak anything under the canopener. A military truck with some super-secret, tarp-covered gizmo attached to the top of the cab triggered the warning sign, but could not resist the "call of the canopener." Tasty treat for the hungry trestle - or maybe just an MRE on wheels?

[Edit 3/19] I received a communication from a source at the U.S. Army that "the tarp that struck the bridge was covering a weapons mount." So apparently no "secret equipment" ... or so they say .... :-)
