What you need to know about Trolley Car 001 testing on the tracks

346479dd-22e8-4c14-9319-4dbc0aebafed.jpg 6fa625ba-24fe-4100-8bce-234f1e43fbdd.jpg First of The Loop Trolley Cars to Make Debut on Tracks for Testing
Testing along the tracks to take place this Sunday; no street closures planned, but those traveling in The Loop area may experience some delays and are urged to follow all parking restrictions

Initial testing of Trolley 001 will begin on Sunday morning and include pushing and pulling of the trolley car by truck, while crews check the clearance of the vehicle with the platforms, curbs, corners and overhead wires. Crews will also conduct visibility checks with the vehicle and the surrounding environment.

WHEN: Sunday, March 26 - Testing will start at approximately 5 a.m. and will last for several hours; timing and work subject to change.

WHERE: Initial testing will start at The Loop Trolley Headquarters and the trolley will head west on Delmar to the end of the tracks by the University City Library, just past Kingsland Avenue. From there, the trolley will switch directions and head east back down Delmar, then south on DeBaliviere to the Missouri History Museum, before reversing directions to head back to The Loop Trolley Headquarters. Along sections of Delmar, the trolley is designed to run  on rails in the street along with regular traffic, while the tracks east of Hodiamont Avenue and along DeBaliviere are in the protected median.

SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first time since arriving in St. Louis in February that Trolley Car 001 will be visible out on the tracks; however, it won’t be moving under its own power. At this time, it will be pulled and pushed along the trolley route by a truck. The public is urged to keep a safe distance from the crews while tests are being performed. Public viewing and media presence is discouraged while the vehicle is in active traffic on the western section of the alignment. Drivers also are being reminded that vehicles cannot be parked on the tracks, must avoid ‘No Parking’ areas, and be within white lines designating on-street parking spaces along the trolley route. Any vehicles parked on the tracks or impeding the trolley’s movement during this time will be towed. No street closures are planned during the testing, but the trolley car, along with the lead and trailing vehicle, will be traveling slowly during this testing phase. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to be patient as testing progresses and to keep an eye out for safety crews and flaggers directing traffic as warranted. Additional tips for staying safe in the vicinity of the trolley and tracks can be found at www.LoopTrolley.com.

The Loop Trolley is a 2.2-mile, fixed-route, electrically powered, heritage trolley that will link St. Louis City and County in an exciting new way, connecting people and neighborhoods, the past and the present.  From restaurants and shopping to entertainment, recreation and the arts, riders will be able to take in the multitude of things to do along the route as they enjoy both the country’s “#1 City Park” and “One of the 10 Great Streets in America.”

346479dd-22e8-4c14-9319-4dbc0aebafed.jpg 6fa625ba-24fe-4100-8bce-234f1e43fbdd.jpg Trolley Car 002 set to arrive this Thursday
Another exciting milestone for the Loop Trolley will take place this Thursday morning, as Trolley Car 002 arrives in St. Louis. The second of the meticulously refurbished trolley cars to be delivered to The Loop Trolley Headquarters features a blue and cream color palate. The public will have the opportunity to sneak a peek and potentially some of their own photos when the truck carrying the trolley car is in route to its destination. The truck will travel north on Kingshighway via 64/40 around 9:45 a.m., then west on Delmar to the Headquarters facility.

While fans are welcome to observe and capture photos as it is in route, they are cautioned that, for safety purposes, access will be limited in the vicinity of the Headquarters as the trolley is unloaded and moved into the facility for testing.  4408ad3c-2f68-4e49-9d6a-e7384b5e1be5.jpg The shell of Trolley Car 002 during refurbishing.

System and Overhead Wires 6fa625ba-24fe-4100-8bce-234f1e43fbdd.jpg65da821d-2b4f-46bb-a905-8490ee0ddb71.jpg
Power-up tests represent important step in system testing and trolley deployment

Next week marks an important milestone for The Loop Trolley project as the electrical system powering the trolleys goes live. Testing of the traction power substation and overhead wires will occur the week of April 24th. Crews will be visible along the tracks on Tuesday as final preparations are made to power up the system and assess any hazards. The testing will continue through Friday, with all work to take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Once this testing begins, all wires are considered “hot” and active at all times, and the public will need to be mindful of the related safety precautions.

With the energization of the overhead, or catenary wires, The Loop Trolley project transitions from its construction phase into the system testing phase in preparation for revenue operations later this year. The existing grounding and bonding used during construction will be removed and a single point of grounding and bonding will be installed at the Headquarters facility.  The 2.2 mile trolley route includes more than 16,000 feet of overhead wire, carrying 600 volts of direct current power from the substation to deployed trolleys along the alignment.

“Approval of the energy system is an important step in our progress,” said Kevin Barbeau, executive director of The Loop Trolley Company, which will operate the trolleys.  “At the same time, it’s important that everyone understand these wires should be considered ‘live’ going forward, and that caution be exercised around the wires and system.”

In the event of an incident resulting in a downed wire along the trolley route, the public is reminded to ALWAYS call 911 immediately to notify emergency personnel.

For any work to be done to the buildings, street lights, or utilities along the Loop Trolley route, notification must be given to the Loop Trolley Company for verification of power. Any such work that would be within 15 feet of the nearest streetcar track and/or overhead wires will need to be carefully planned, executed and permitted.  The Loop Trolley Company has coordinated efforts with the City of St. Louis and University City to have the Loop Trolley added to their respective permit programs and links to both cities and their permit systems can be found here.

Representatives from The Loop Trolley Company are available to meet with individuals planning work, on site, to discuss the details, equipment to be used, space needed and any other aspect of the job. This process applies to all work or activities that may take place on Delmar Blvd., between Kingsland and DeBaliviere, and on DeBaliviere, between Delmar Blvd. and the History Museum in Forest Park.

The need for special permits also applies to community organizations, businesses and neighborhood associations that may be working or hosting an event that would have elements that come within the same close proximity to the streetcar track and overhead wires. Examples could include the erecting of a large tent or the hanging of banners/signage from a building or pedestrian light poles.

“Our goal is to help ensure the public’s safety in regards to trolley movement or any component in the trolley system,” notes Barbeau.

The Loop Trolley will run a total of 2.2 miles through the Delmar Loop, along Delmar Blvd. and continue on DeBaliviere Ave., connecting people and neighborhoods, the past and the present. From restaurants and shopping to entertainment, recreation and the arts, riders will be able to take in the multitude of attractions to experience along the route as they enjoy both the country’s “#1 City Park” and “One of the 10 Great Streets in America.”

Owned by The Loop Trolley Transportation Development District and operated by The Loop Trolley Company, The Loop Trolley promotes connectivity, environmentally friendly transportation and pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods to enhance quality of life, increase tourism and help spur economic development.   How much is it going to cost to ride?". Today we're excited to share that the fare structure, pricing and method of purchase/validation for trolley passengers has now been finalized.

The initial fare structure will consist of two fare types –
$2.00 for a Two-Hour Fare and $5.00 for an All-Day Pass, with Reduced Fare ticket prices of $1.00 and $2.50, respectively, for disabled passengers and senior passengers age 65 or older with valid identification or documentation. Children age five and under may ride free with adult supervision.

Tickets can be purchased by two methods: physical tickets with cash or card at any of the thirteen ticket vending machines (TVMs) which will be located on or near the trolley platforms, or mobile tickets via an account-based application available through iOS and Android app stores. For TVM purchases, the clock will start on Two-Hour Fares beginning at the time of purchase, with All-Day Passes only valid for the day on which they are purchased. On the mobile application, passengers can purchase their tickets any time in advance and activate on their smartphone prior to boarding.

“We've looked at other American transit fare systems and ultimately settled on a simpler structure with fewer fare options,” said Kevin Barbeau, Loop Trolley Company’s Executive Director. “In this way, the ticket purchase process will be more straightforward, assuring passengers aren't overwhelmed when making their purchases at physical ticket vending machines or through the mobile application.”

For both physical and mobile tickets, passengers will scan their ticket(s) via an on-board validator located at each entrance to the trolley vehicles. The Loop Trolley will not accept cash-based fares on-board; hence, any passenger without valid fare or with an expired fare must de-board and purchase a valid ticket.

While the Trolley system will not open with the capacity for transfers to or from Metro bus/lightrail services, it's something that is certainly of interest; we'll continue working with Metro to identify the technological and programmatic aspects of interoperability with the fare systems.

Loop Trolley’s First Refurbished Car Arrives

In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, visitors to the Loop were delighted to see Car 001 powering through the full 2.2 mile trolley system as Trolley Operators continued their training and familiarization with active-traffic interactions. This was the first time the electrically-powered vehicles have shared the road during regular business hours.

The testing phase began in earnest this week to test and assess the system as a whole, with special attention paid to powered interface with platforms, signalized intersections, switch points and safety mechanisms. Due to the stop-and-inspect nature of these activities, most testing was and will be conducted in the early morning, so as not to disrupt traffic.

Both the familiarization runs and test activities went exceptionally well, with no incidents or issues identified.

"It's an incredibly exciting step for the project, in many different ways," said Kevin Barbeau, Executive Director for the Loop Trolley Company.

"Just seeing them out on the street under their own power, pulling into Forest Park or moving past the many great businesses along Delmar, really drives home the benefits and potential of the entire project."

Over the past two months, powered movement has been limited to the protected section of the alignment on Delmar between DeBaliviere Ave. and the historic Wabash Station at Delmar/Des Peres, and on DeBaliviere between Delmar and Forest Park Parkway, wherein the first class of Loop Trolley Operators have amassed approximately 40 hours of on-vehicle training.

For SIT, Training and Passenger Service, the trolleys will share the road with personal vehicles in the portion of the alignment west of the Des Peres Bridge on Delmar, and regularly interact with vehicles at intersections and driveways east of the Des Peres Bridge on Delmar, and on DeBaliviere. As the trolleys cannot veer to avoid obstacles, it is important that any vehicle parked on the street-running portion park against the curb, and that the vehicle be completely inside of the striped parking lane.
