Given the proclivity for mudslides and their running literally on the beach, I would expect something soon about the rest of the Pacific Surfliners.

And here it is, from the Pacific Surfliner website:

Precautionary Service Adjustments for Tropical Storm Hilary

Updated August 19, 2023

The national hurricane center has issued a tropical storm warning for most of Southern California for the first time in history. The storm is expected to reach the region on Sunday, bringing heavy rains and strong winds, which are expected to last into Monday.

Train Cancellations

Due to the tropical storm warning and some equipment issues, adjustments will be made to Pacific Surfliner train schedules. Some trains will be cancelled as a precautionary measure. The following trains will be impacted:

  • Saturday, August 19:
    • Train 591 will begin in Solana Beach and make all scheduled stops in the northbound direction. The San Diego Santa Fe Depot (SAN) and Old Town San Diego (OLT) stations will not be served. We recommend passengers seeking to travel from SAN or OLT take trains 785 or 595 instead
    • Trains 573 and 580 will be cancelled due to equipment issues
    • Train 794 will be cancelled between Los Angeles and San Diego
  • Sunday, August 20:
    • Trains 562, 573580, 591 will be cancelled
    • Train 794 will be cancelled between Los Angeles and San Diego
    • Train 761 will be cancelled between San Diego and Los Angeles
    • The LOSSAN Agency will provide mutual aid to COASTER and Metrolink passengers by allowing them to ride any Pacific Surfliner train on Sunday, August 20.
  • Monday, August 21:
    • Train 761 will be cancelled between San Diego and Los Angeles
  • Additional cancellations may be necessary as we get closer to the storm making landfall

The Amtrak ticket window will be open at the Irvine and Oceanside Stations on August 20 and 21 as part of our storm preparations and response. More info is included in the section below.

We are hopeful that the impacts of the tropical storm will be minimal and are closely working with our partners to ensure that travel along the corridor remains safe. Please follow the emergency alerts for your city and county, check often for updates, heed evacuation warnings, and stay off the roads if possible.

Additional updates will be posted here as information becomes available.
