'We need governor's signature': Amtrak's restart in Mobile in Ivey's hands as deadline looms

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey must decide by Wednesday whether the state will make a $5.3 million commitment over three years to bring Amtrak service back to Mobile, connecting the city with New Orleans.

This is the update.

Southern states miss funding deadline to restore Amtrak's Gulf Coast service

The Southern Rail Commission (SRC) announced yesterday that it was unable to apply for the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) fiscal-year 2017 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure Safety and Improvements (CRISI) funding due to a lack of financial commitments from Mississippi and Alabama.

The money would have been used to help restore Amtrak service along the U.S. Gulf Coast, where passenger service has been suspended since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

New Orleans, LA Times-Picayune, 6/22/18:

Only Louisiana offers money to restart Amtrak route on Gulf Coast

Plans to resume passenger train service on the northern Gulf Coast for the first time since Hurricane Katrina suffered a setback with Alabama and Mississippi refusing money for the project, but a leader of the effort said Friday (June 22) the project isn't dead.

Read that

Sad that only one of three states (needed for a restored Gulf Coast Limited) was willing to pony up the money.  And the idea of a restored Gulf Breeze (which was totally within Alabama) is moot.    Maybe Louisiana could put their money into something intrastate, like the long-sought New Orleans-Baton Rouge train?

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL 6/26/18:

Outspoken Southern Rail Commission member terminated

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) - A member of the Southern Rail Commission says he's been terminated by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, just one week after strongly urging the Governor to pledge to fund for passenger Amtrak service between Mobile and New Orleans.

Jerry Gehman says he received an email notifying him of the decision, although he says the letter does not give a reason for the termination.

Gehman said his term on the commission was not set to expire until 2020.

Mobile to vote on new train station 13 days after Ivey declined funds for Amtrak restart

The city of Mobile is poised to move ahead with the design and master planning of a new downtown train station, despite Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey's decision last month to decline state funds for an Amtrak restart along the Gulf Coast.

Not so sure I understand what good a new station will do without trains serving it.

Story here.

Well, it's just a design for a station that they're voting on.  They don't have, and aren't approving, any monies to actually build it at this point.  Seems more like they just want to be prepared and ready to go if service is restored.

Also probably sends a small message to the Gov that they actually do want to have the train restored.

Alan,

Take care and take trains!
