Officials question possible Walpole to Foxboro commuter rail

FOXBORO - State transportation officials are being close-mouthed about a possible commuter rail extension from Walpole to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. MBTA and Department of Transportation officials declined to answer questions about the project Tuesday and said a briefing for Foxboro selectmen is planned for next month. State officials also plan to meet later with Walpole officials, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo.

Residents, legislators oppose Walpole-Foxboro commuter rail link

WALPOLE - Roberta Lohnis lives along the CSX freight-only railroad tracks south of the Walpole commuter rail station, but says she's bothered only occasionally by the passing of a slow-rolling train.
That could change if the MBTA decides to make good on a proposal to extend daily commuter service to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority could test operating daily trains to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough by the fall of 2018, MBTA officials say, a prospect of additional service that comes as its commuter rail contractor, Keolis, struggles to operate its current schedule.

Residents packed the auditorium at Boyden Elementary School Tuesday night to hear - and protest - plans for a pilot commuter train to Foxboro that would run through Walpole.

 

"I don't see how this benefits Walpole in the least," said Mark Hogan, who came to the meeting for state Rep. Louis Kafka.

My organization, the Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce -- which represents 350 businesses across Foxborough, Mansfield, and Norton -- strongly supports the pilot program to offer daily commuter rail service to Foxboro Station at Gillette Stadium for important economic development reasons.

Foxboro selectmen delay action on commuter rail to Gillette

 

The final word on whether selectmen will agree to support a pilot program for daily commuter rail service to Gillette Stadium has been delayed at least two more weeks.

 

After discussion of the program, which included many questions about a possible train layover station in town, selectmen Chairman David Feldman agreed at last week's board meeting more information is needed.

Selectmen Revote To Back Commuter Rail Train At Gillette Stadium

 

The Foxborough Board of Selectmen will continue to support a proposal to bring the commuter rail to town.

 

The board voted 4-1 at their meeting Tuesday to continue to back a pilot program at the Gillette Stadium platform, despite the possibility of a layover station if the pilot is successful.
