VRE to Operate "S" Schedule

VRE will operate its "S" Schedule Monday, December 21 on both rail lines. Only those trains marked with an "S" above the train number will operate on Monday. A decision regarding Tuesday's service will be made tomorrow evening.

Our facilities crews have been working the stations all day. Most of the parking lots have been touched at least once. The platforms have been cleared, but passing trains continue to blow snow back on them. Our best advice is to use caution.

Leave yourself plenty of time to not only get to the station, but once there to get to the platform.

Use the handrails when using station steps or ramps as icy conditions may still exist.

Hold the handrails while boarding, detraining, and while walking through the train. The vestibule steps can become icy and wet shoes can be slippery on the car floors.

Above all else, where sensible shoes and clothing. Temperatures will be quite frigid in the morning so bundle up and wear shoes that will allow you plenty of traction.

"S" Schedule Trains are as follows:

Fredericksburg Line

302, 306, 308, 310 in the morning

301, 303, 307, 311 in the afternoon/evening

Manassas Line

324, 328, 330, 332 in the morning

325, 327, 331, 335 in the afternoon/evening

"S" Schedule on Tuesday

VRE has decided to operate on its "S" schedule tomorrow, December 22. A decision about Wednesday's service will be made tomorrow.

December 24th is already a planned "S" day and there will be no service on Friday in observance of the Christmas Holiday.

We are aware that many of our lots were not well plowed. Many of those lots are the responsibility of VDOT to plow. With a storm of this magnitude, they have many priorities before VRE lots. We are working with VDOT on Brooke, Leeland Road and Broad Run. Our understanding is that Manassas Park has improved since this morning.

With that said, please follow the advice we gave out yesterday:

Leave yourself plenty of time to not only get to the station, but once there to get to the platform.

Use the handrails when using station steps or ramps as icy conditions may still exist.

Hold the handrails while boarding, detraining, and while walking through the train. The vestibule steps can become icy and wet shoes can be slippery on the car floors.

Above all else, where sensible shoes and clothing. Temperatures will be quite frigid in the morning so bundle up and wear shoes that will allow you plenty of traction.

Fredericksburg Line

302, 306, 308, 310 in the morning

301, 303, 307, 311 in the afternoon/evening

Manassas Line
324, 328, 330, 332 in the morning

Train Talk, December 22, 2009 2:45 PM

This message is for all VRE riders:

Regular Schedule on Wednesday, December 23

VRE will operate on its full, regular schedule tomorrow, December 23.

In the meanwhile, we want to take a moment and address two of the biggest questions we received today.

1) What is the status of the Brooke and Leeland Road Parking lots and why weren't they cleared sooner?
VDOT is currently on-site at both lots working to clear drive lanes and unoccupied spaces. They will return later this evening to re-work any areas where people parked during the day today. Unfortunately, VRE is not permitted to contract with private plowers to clear these lots as they are state owned property.

2) My train was crowded this morning. Why weren't there enough seats?
Between the holidays and the inclement weather, predict ridership patterns is never easy. Even looking at the ridership this morning, some were packed to the gills, while others had plenty of room. We know that there was considerable crowding on the first train on each line this morning, and there will be some crowding this evening.

Once again, thank you for all of your patience and understanding. As you know, this was the biggest snow storm that our area has seen in many years. We did not get everything perfect, and there is always room to learn. Thank you for letting us be your commuting choice. We wish you all a happy holiday season!
