From Nashville, TN Tennessean, 6/14/08:

As the numbers on the gas pump speed by three times as fast as they once did, some Nashville commuters and public officials are dreaming of high-speed buses and sleek trains.

But Music City's mass transit daydreams will remain just that unless the city can come up with millions of new dollars in a difficult economy.

Read it here.

Officials: Here's where Nashville could build light rail

One takeaway I had during the Amp debate: A great deal of Nashvillians clamor over light rail.

Light rail, super-fast buses: Nashville transit officials' long-awaited plans include everything but the kitchen sink

Metro consultants and Metro Transit Authority CEO Steve Bland unveiled a trio of transit scenario alternatives Thursday, ranging from a comprehensive regional plan filled with light rail and streetcars to a less cost-intensive proposal to make “modest improvements” to the city’s existing bus network.

Nashville Makes Down Payment on Ambitious Transit Plan

A hint of the vision is here.:

I've been to Nashville once.  At first glance I don't see any natural corridors that would take LRT between trip generation points.  Street running would be slow, and eminent domain for privet right-of-way would boost construction cost.

Nashville mayor talks mass transit, regional economy

SNIP: She talked about how transportation affects the Nashville economy and economies in surrounding counties, citing state legislation that will allow buses to use shoulders along the Murfreesboro corridor, and the creation of private-public partnerships for investment opportunities in mass transit, as progressive actions.

Business leaders: $5.5B of light rail and speedy buses is not enough

The most ambitious of three potential ways Middle Tennessee could expand its mass transit would cost $5.5 billion over 25 years, involving a mix of features that are MIA today: light rail, streetcars and giving buses their own lanes on the busiest roads and highways.

‘Local option’ in governor’s plan could help light rail in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – As Tennesseans digest Governor Bill Haslam’s sweeping gas tax overhaul announced Wednesday, one part of the plan is particularly exciting to city and county leaders since it would give them another tool to address their own local traffic issues.

It is evident by the text and video that the TV station has received a mish-mash of information on rail transit.  Notice the comment on light rail, when actually the term should be commuter or regional rail.  The video adds to the confusion of terms by showing a computer animation of light rail and stock footage of a Chicago el train.

But hey, at least Nashville is moving forward—in some direction—with rail transit.

Tennessean, Nashville, TN, 4/28/17:

What could light rail on Nashville's Gallatin Pike look like?

Gallatin Pike in East Nashville is a mix of grit and signs of growth — where pawn shops, auto repair garages and discount tobacco stores operate next to hip restaurants and bars.

Next in its evolution: perhaps the city’s first stretch of light rail.
