Canadian Pacific Suspends Canadian Service After Strike
Union, railroad trying to hammer out a contract after missing deadline

Canadian Pacific Railway suspended Canadian service on Wednesday after union workers began a strike early in the day.

CP railroad service within the U.S. will not be affected. Railroad management and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, the union representing 4,800 engineers, conductors and rail traffic controllers, are still in negotiations. Canadian Labor Minister Lisa Raitt was unable to get the two parties to agree to a contract before the midnight deadline.

CSX CUSTOMER SERVICE BULLETIN - 9:58 am, 5/23
CSX Actions in Response to CP Strike

May 23, 2012 - CSX is closely monitoring the work stoppage that occurred early today on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP), which is affecting its Canadian operations.

At this time, CSX continues to accept and move any traffic billed to destinations on the CP in Canada, but will not perform any interchanges to or from the CP until the strike is ended. If this labor situation is not resolved within the next 12-24 hours, CSX will take additional actions that include staging rail cars on the CSX network that are destined to CP locations in Canada.

CSX will keep you updated as events warrant.

CSX CUSTOMER SERVICE BULLETIN - 5:45 pm, 5/23
CSX Updates Actions in Response to CP Strike

May 23, 2012 - CSX continues to closely monitor the work stoppage that occurred early today on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP), which is affecting its Canadian operations.

At this time, CP has embargoed rail traffic moving to its Canadian destinations. While this embargo is in effect, CSX customers will be unable to bill rail cars to Canada if CP is in the route.

To avoid potential congestion at interchange points and other terminals, CSX plans to gather and stage cars already destined for CP's Canadian locations at certain points on our network. Once the embargo is lifted, these cars will move in larger blocks to the interchanges.

Strike begins at Canadian Pacific railway

TORONTO (AP) -- Canada's labor minister said Wednesday the government will introduce legislation if necessary to end a strike at Canadian Pacific railway, which has forced the suspension of its freight service in Canada and the United States.

Teamsters Canada said the strike against Canada's second-largest railway started just after midnight Wednesday. The nation's larger railway, CN, can make up for some - but not all - of the transport needs.

Headline begs a clarification, since VIA Rail has a train named after the country. The train they call the Canadian is running normally, but other trains in Ontario are affected.

CP to lay off more than 3,000 workers due to Teamsters strike

Because of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) strike launched early yesterday and a subsequent suspension of freight operations, more than 2,000 “other unionized” employees will not be required and are being laid off, Canadian Pacific officials announced late yesterday.

Story here.

Canada Could End CP Strike Thursday
Back-to-work government action expected to be introduced Monday

Canadian Pacific Railway shippers could see their raw materials and products move once again Thursday, as accelerated legislation to end a six-day strike takes effect, according to a report.

The back-to-work bill, expected to be introduced today, could become law in the second half of the week, according to Dow Jones. The government action comes after CP and the railroad union hit an impasse Sunday, dampening shippers’ hopes of getting their loads moving again on the Canadian network. CP operations in U.S. haven't been affected by the strike.
