The New York Times "Letters to the Editor, 10/24:

At New Jersey Transit, a ‘Culture Change’ Is Called For
OCT. 24, 2016

To the Editor:

Neglect Brings a Steep Decline for N.J. Transit” (front page, Oct. 14) speaks a simple truth that both regular commuters and occasional passengers on regional rail lines have known for years: The state of railroad transportation in this country is deplorable.

The wry but accurate statement of Anthony Foxx, the federal transportation secretary, that this level of neglect is “almost criminal” speaks volumes.  .  .  .

To the Editor:

Your article about the decline in New Jersey Transit focused on reductions in capital.

During the agency’s successful 1990s, my colleagues and I delivered extensive leadership development, customer service programs and other need-based programs.  .  .  .

Newark, NJ Star-Ledger, 10/25/16:

Lawmakers still demanding answers from NJ Transit following fatal train crash

New Jersey lawmakers investigating last month's fatal train crash in Hoboken are keeping the pressure on state transportation officials, demanding answers to questions on finances and safety they say weren't adequately addressed at a hearing last week.

Newark, NJ Star-Ledger, 11/2/16:

Feds: NJ Transit's trains are the worst, breakdown the most

NJ Transit had more trains breakdowns last year than any other commuter railroad in the nation, according to a Federal Transit Administration database.

The agency had 540 instances in 2015 where a mechanical breakdown prevented a commuter train from completing a revenue trip or starting a new trip, according to the National Transit Database, which is compiled from information supplied by transit agencies.

That story

AP 11/4:

NJ Transit boss: Phone use, other violations unacceptable

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Federal regulators have found numerous safety violations on the state's troubled commuter rail system, including the lack of on-board emergency tools and working fire extinguishers, trains stopping too close to each other and workers using cellphones when they shouldn't have.

New Jersey Transit Executive Director Steve Santoro disclosed the findings on Friday to a panel of state lawmakers investigating the agency after a fatal train crash in Hoboken in September.

Santoro apologized for skipping last month's oversight hearing on short notice to meet with federal regulators, telling upset lawmakers he didn't mean it "as a sign of disrespect or disinterest."
