Amtrak Service Alert:

Several Amtrak Atlantic Coast Service Suspensions Due To Hurricane Matthew Some service resumption in Florida; Georgia, Carolinas and Virginia outages due track conditions

Oct. 8, 2016
9:15 p.m. EDT

Amtrak is temporarily suspending most service in the southeast on Sunday, Oct. 9, due to the severe weather impact of Hurricane Matthew along the Atlantic Coast.

In Virginia, service to and from Norfolk is suspended, with Trains 71 & 88 instead originating and terminating in Richmond. Service to and from Newport News is expected to operate.

In North Carolina, Piedmont service between Raleigh and Charlotte (Trains 73-76) is suspended. The Carolinian (Trains 79 & 80) will originate and terminate in Richmond, rather than traveling to and from Charlotte.

In Georgia, the Palmetto (Trains 89 & 90) will operate only between New York City and Washington, D.C., and is cancelled to points south to Savannah.

In Florida, the Silver Star (Trains 91 & 92), will operate only between Miami and Tampa, northbound on the 9th and southbound on Oct. 10. Otherwise, the Silver Star is canceled between Tampa and New York City, as is the Silver Meteor (Trains 97 & 98) between New York City and Miami and the Auto Train (Trains 52 & 53) between Lorton, Va., and Sanford, Fla.

Amtrak Thruway Bus Connections associated with the above routes are also disrupted.

This information is correct as of the above time and date. Information is subject to change as conditions warrant.

Passengers with travel plans can confirm their train's status, change their plans or review refund information using a range of tools – including Amtrak.com, smartphone apps or by calling 800-USA-RAIL. Service Alerts, Passenger Notices and other announcements are posted at Amtrak.com/alerts.

Amtrak's mention of the Norfolk trains can be confusing to the novice. Train 71 runs Saturdays only, and Train 88 runs Saturdays and Sundays. Train 71 terminated at Richmond last night. The equipment of 71 that normally terminates in Norfolk would turn there as 88 on Sunday morning. Train 88 this morning originated from Richmond. Today's Norfolk-bound train is 157 (and it would normally turn as Monday's Train 84 out of Norfolk), so we will see what they have in store for that one. A responsible Amtrak PR department would put out another alert today to clarify that, but we shall see if that happens.

So the total outage for some trains is a week or a little over a week.  At least everything will be restored, unlike the aftermath of Katrina.

I had reservations on today's (Wednesday) northbound Auto Train.  I cancelled last week because of uncertainty when it would start running again.  Am very glad I did, as it is supposed to be 6 hours late leaving Sanford.   I can image the crowd and confusion at the Sanford station.

ps.  Same thing happened to me a year ago.
