NS Intermodal Service Alert:

Signal Upgrades Near Roanoke, VA

Apr 30, 2015

To ensure Norfolk Southern maintains high standards of safety and service across our network, we will be upgrading our signal systems near Roanoke, VA on Sunday, May 3rd as part of the overall positive train control (PTC) initiative.

As a result of this work, Intermodal traffic originating from or destined to Norfolk/NIT, Columbus, Harrisburg, Louisville, or Rossville will be impacted during this 12-hour track outage.

The following trains are expected to incur a 3 to 4-hour delayed availability:

  • 22A-02 (NIT/Norfolk to Appliance Park/Louisville)
  • 236-02 (Columbus to APMT/NIT)
  • 201-02 (Harrisburg to Rossville)
  •  23G-02 (Louisville to Norfolk/APMT/NIT)

About Positive Train Control
PTC describes technology mandated by the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (RSIA) that is designed to automatically stop or slow a train before certain accidents occur. In particular, PTC is designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, derailments caused by excessive speed, unauthorized incursions by trains onto sections of track where repairs are being made, and movement of a train through a track switch left in the wrong position.
