Second Avenue Sagas editorial on the flooded trains issue, 1/4/13:

From Christie, an odd defense of NJ Transit execs

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is flying high these days. After taking a hard stand against his GOP colleagues in the House on Sandy relief, his star has risen among both Republicans and Democrats in the northeast.

Asbury Park, NJ Press, 1/10/13:

Coast Line to return to 96 percent service Monday

NJ Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line service will return to 96 percent of what the service level was before superstorm Sandy on Monday.

Story is here.

Just a clarification of what is in the article, there are no electric trains from the North Jersey Coast Line to Hoboken. The Waterfront Connection they use is not electrified (although it could be easily since there are electrified tracks leading to the Meadowlands Maintenance Center). The diesel trians from Bay Head to Hoboken will be freed up by the replacement of Gladstone Branch trains by electrics, which could not run previously since the storm due to damage on that line and in Hoboken.

Timetables are being revised again. Happy to report that three lines are now reverting on January 14th to their regular print timetables, dated 10/14/12 -- 2 weeks before the storm rendered them useless. I thought there might be a new general change on all lines in tandem with the Amtrak schedules taking effect on 1/14/13, but I guess they will wait until all NJT lines are back to full service as they were pre-Sandy, which from what I've seen won't happen until March. NJ Transit: Still months away from all Sandy-damaged trains being restored
