KXAN-TV, Channel 36 in Austin, TX, 10/17/16:

CAMPO board votes to remove Lone Star Rail project

The future of the $2 billion Lone Star Rail Project was determined by a unanimous vote on Monday. In the 18-0 vote, the Capital Area Metro Planning Organization (CAMPO) voted to remove the proposed rail line from its 2040 plan.

This is not looking too good.  I am not sure what, if ever anything, might develop from this.   If commuter rail never operates in this corridor, is it ripe for an Amtrak type corridor like the Pacific Surfliners or Capitol Corridor?   30 trains per day is more than any other corridor, save for the Northeast Corridor.

Note that even with the published time line, initial revenue service would not have begun until 2022, with full service two years later in 2024.

Maybe Amtrak to the rescue??    From San Marcos Corridor News, 1/17/17:

Amtrak Studies Austin-San Antonio Corridor For Commuter Alternative

If you live anywhere along the innovation corridor you know how stressful it can be to be stuck in traffic on I-35.

It is especially disruptive to the lives of those that have to commute between these cities for work almost daily.

Here we go again, it's in the news once more.   From Texas Public Radio, 3/26/24:

Can San Antonio-to-Austin commuter rail get back on track?

San Antonio, Austin and parts in-between are some of the fastest growing communities, cities and counties in the nation. The San Antonio-Austin corridor saw its population increase over the last decade by over 30%, and it’s expected to be home to over 6 million people by 2030. Experts even predict it could surpass the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in population by 2050.
