Streetcar construction will wrap up this year

Construction of the Kansas City streetcar line will be complete in 2015

On Thursday, Meghan Jansen, a spokeswoman for the KC Streetcar Constructors, told the Kansas City Streetcar Authority Inc. board that construction of the 2.2-mile, more than $100 million streetcar line is rolling along. Jansen represents the joint venture of St. Joseph heavy contractor Herzog Contracting Corp. and California rail builder Stacy and Witbeck Inc.. She reported the following:

And we're seeing yet another instance of date slippage.  The goal of revenue service by the end of 2015 appears to be gone, and now they are shooting for "early 2016".  I was recently hoping that KC would build, test, and get their streetcar open quicker than Washington DC's continuing saga.

Kansas City, MO Star, 3/1/15:

Kansas City streetcar construction is on pace for passengers in early 2016

Kansas City’s downtown streetcar construction process is nearly 50 percent complete and should be finished by this fall.

But then the vehicles will undergo months of testing before passengers are expected to start riding in the first few months of 2016.

This is the story.

Kansas City Business Journal, 8/11:

Kansas City: Streetcar delay is a 'critical' issue

Kansas City's streetcar delay is now a "critical" issue.

City officials have known about the issue for months and have been charging the streetcar manufacturer CAF USA Inc. $1,000 a day since June for missing its initial delivery deadline.

On Tuesday, City spokesman Chris Hernandez offered additional information about the status of the city's about $18 million order for streetcars with the Washington-based subsidiary of Spanish rail company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A. It was the first update the city has given on the issue since the issue came to light early last week.

OK we're getting there.  However the modern streetcar thing seems to be an epidemic, with other cities now experiencing delays like Washington, DC has had.

Here's a sure way to set back your production schedule:

Getting items shipped from Spain to New York was delayed by more than a month when the manufacturer missed a transatlantic boat ride.

Cincinnati and Houston streetcars are ahead of Kansas City’s and theirs are also delayed.

       - KCTV;   Milestone marked for Kansas City streetcar project

Appears CAF reserved space on a ship (not a "boat") and missed their production date, and likely paid for the unused cargo capacity.
