Since this thread was originally posted, and partially due to the debacle several years ago when regional rail in the area seemed a sure thing before the US government decided the project was not that important to fund, Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) shortened their name to just Triangle Transit. They offer a link to another site: http://www.ourtransitfuture.com/ that implies there will be light rail in the area (but sporting the LYNX logo from Charlotte!).

I supported regional (commuter) rail between the three cities at that time. However given the success of the RiverLINE at about 35 miles and the potential Gold Line in Los Angeles reaching 51 miles once the Foothill extension is built out, I can surely support LRT for the Triangle. Raleigh-Durham, per Amtrak's timetable is 28 miles. Chapel Hill is not served by Amtrak, but the distance from Raleigh is about 25 driving miles, and from Durham is about 10 miles by car.

Durham, NC Herald-Sun, 1/12/12:

Rail planners: No need to set route now

Transit planners say there’s plenty of time – five or six years, in fact – to deal with issues neighborhood and environmental groups are raising about a proposed rail line between Durham and Chapel Hill.

More.

Given the cost for implementation, I suspect you're right, Kevin, that this line would be similar to NJT's RiverLINE. I hope planners opt for CNG for cleaner emissions and faster acceleration.

Buried in the above article is also a new Amtrak stop at Hillsborough, which will add to the travel time while NC is continuously doing what it can to speed up the trip time between Raleigh and Charlotte. Sad that a regional/commuter network for the Triangle area has devolved into depending on three existing Amtrak round trips per day, which also slows down passengers travelling longer distances.

Supporters of a 17.3-mile route in the Orange-Durham transit plan said it is critical to concentrating economic and residential growth. Opposition claims only 4.3 miles will serve southern Chapel Hill and there's no plan for a direct link to Research Triangle Park. View the full article
