LA Metro board OKs new light-rail line from Artesia to Union Station

The LA Metro Board approved a 19.3-mile light-rail line on Thursday, Jan. 27, that would take riders from Artesia to downtown Los Angeles, a first-of-its-kind transit project serving lower income communities in southeast LA County.

I don't know if the A Line can handle transferring passengers during the phase where the branch terminates short of downtown.  It does make sense to continue this line to Union Station, especially if the existing infrastructure of the A and E lines downtown, as well as the Downtown Connector, are at capacity and could not handle another route interlined with them.   On the other side of the coin, in a sense some may consider a branch to Union Station as redundant, seeing as how the Downtown Connector is going to bring A Line service through downtown to, you guessed it, Union Station before it continues over what is now the L (former Gold) Line to Pasadena and eventually Montclair.

Can't say for sure, but I believe I saw on a map in the past that the Santa Ana branch line would get the letter S.

RT&S, 1/28/22

It might take 20 years, but LA Metro board approves ‘first-of-its-kind’ light-rail project

Lower income families in southeast Los Angeles County will one day be able to enjoy a light-rail line that will run from Artesia to downtown Los Angeles.

The LA Metro board approved the 19.3-mile line, which is expected to cost $8.5 billion. Officials are calling it a first-of-its-kind endeavor because of the impact it will have on lower income families.

The project will use tracks that were once used by Pacific Electric, which is called the West Santa Ana Branch line. The road will run through Artesia, Cerritos, Bellflower, Paramount, Downey, South Gate, Cudahy, Bell, Huntington Park, Vernon, and Florence-Graham before stopping at L.A.’s Union Station.

Progressive Railroading, 2/28/22

L.A. Metro's West Santa Ana Branch project advances

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has approved the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (L.A. Metro) request to move the West Santa Ana Branch Transit Corridor project to the development phase as part of the federal Capital Investment Grants Program.

The announcement means the project is more likely to be eligible for federal funding. The proposed 14.8-mile route from Slauson/A Line to Pioneer, California, was also approved as the Locally Preferred Alternative for the project’s initial segment between Artesia and downtown Los Angeles.

Long Beach, CA Press-Telegram,  11/5/22:

Push is on for federal funding of 19-mile rail line, Artesia to Union Station

Less than a month ago, President Joe Biden spoke from a Metro rail construction site in Los Angeles, saying he fully expects members of the U.S. Congress to put in requests for a chunk of the $1 trillion infrastructure law.

Last week, Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Norwalk, took him up on his offer.

Stations, new name coming for West Santa Ana Branch light-rail in southeast LA County

Dozens of participants in an online town hall Wednesday were largely enthusiastic about LA Metro’s plans for the 14.8-mile-long, southern segment of a proposed light-rail system that would go from Artesia to the existing A Line Slauson Station.

Update

This begs the question, with the naming convention across the existing system now being letters, why not simply assign it a letter?  Short and simple.

LA Metro asks the public to re-name its West Santa Ana Branch train project

Question: Will the proposed West Santa Ana Branch rail line go to Santa Ana or Orange County?

Answer: Absolutely not.

That’s why the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) has launched a contest asking the public to submit new, shall we say more accurate names for the train line that will run from downtown Los Angeles to Artesia through southeast LA County.

KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, CA 8/29/23

The LA Metro needs to rename a critical project. Here’s why

Los Angeles officials are in desperate need of a new name for a transit project in southeast Los Angeles County that has caused some confusion among the masses.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, aka LA Metro, is looking for a new name for the West Santa Ana Branch Transit Corridor project, in hopes of clearing up the confusion.

Despite its name, the planned transit expansion project stops short of Orange County and comes nowhere near Santa Ana. Instead the 14.5-mile segment connects Artesia to downtown Los Angeles with nine stops in the Gateway Cities along the way.

SNIP

Metro has launched a renaming contest for the new segment, and each person who submits a name for consideration will be entered to win a $100 gift card.

    New Metro Line

The Metro board is set to vote soon on a final environmental impact report for what’s called the Southeast Gateway Line, which is planned to run through Southeast L.A. County. A “yes” vote would clear the way for design and engineering work to begin on the project.
