Does this include DMU's or whatever they are like the North San Diego Sprinter?

No, the Sprinter is considered to be diesel light rail (same as Ottawa's O-Train and NJ's RiverLINE), so it falls under the Transit qualification.

Topic bumped to reflect an update to the parent post in this thread. The 23rd commuter rail property in the USA opened 3/22/10 in Texas when Cap Metro's Metrorail began in revenue service between Leander and Austin.

Added to the future list SMART (Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit), which is currently scheduled to go to construction in 2011 and be in revenue service by the end of 2014.

These commuter rail lines will be coming online within a few years:

  • RTD (Denver)
  • Capital-Red Rose Corridor (Harrisburg)
  • Lone Star Transit District (LSTAR, Austin, TX)
  • SunRail (Orlando, FL)
  • SMART (Sonoma & Marin Counties, CA)

So..... now that we have two dozen, who do I predict be number 25?

Out of the five above, the only one that seems like it's in construction status and with no setbacks so far, is Denver. The East Line to the airport will most likely be first, and then the Gold Line. Projected date is 2017.

There are no projected dates for SunRail, LSTAR, or Capital-Red Rose Corridor; in fact one hardly hears about the latter anymore. SMART was projected for 2014, but if that date does hold it may be a watered down version that doesn't connect with the ferry to San Francisco.

Bottom line, it will be a while before this thread receives another update, unless the worst happens and we lose a rail operator. Let's hope not!

I'm also adding another property to the future list, namely TEX, which will be yet another Texas commuter rail line and a cousin of Trinity Railway Express (TRE). It will run on a diagonal from southwestern Fort Worth, through downtown (interfacing with TRE, the Texas Eagle and the Heartland Flyer), and then to the northeast through Grapevine to the DFW Airport (connecting with the future DART Orange Line). Website here. If TEX and LSTAR come to fruition, Texas will truly be the commuter rail capital of the nation!

Perhaps we should add UTA Frontrunner South (Salt Lake City to Provo), which is on track to come on line in 2015. I was just out there, and saw that construction is coming along well. The platforms for Provo and Murray stations are pretty much done and they are starting to lay tracks. Murray is an interchange station with TRAX. I saw the station site work while traveling on TRAX to Sandy and back. On a related subject, the tracks are in place for the Airport TRAX line (due in 2013), but electrification is yet to be added, and the junction with the Red/Blue lines to be constructed. They are carrying out trials on the West Valley Line (Green Line) which is due for inauguration in August. The University - West Valley route trains are currently running to either at Fashion Place West or Murray Central. When the line opens they will be redirected to West Valley City Center Station. Also the Mid Jordan line goes on line sometime in 2012. Those trains will run between Arena (ex-Delta Center) to Daybreak Station.

Jishnu,

FrontRunner South will be an add-on to an existing system, and not a new system. So its startup, hopefully by 2015, will not affect this list. But thanks for the progress report. Interesting to note that just like FrontRunner North, most of the line is on private ROW adjacent to the Union Pacific tracks rather than sharing tracks with freight trains. This construction would be visible to passengers of the California Zephyr, except that if close to schedule it operates through SLC in both directions in darkness.

Future list edited to "strike" Capital/Red Rose Corrridor since it apparently won't be happening within the next few years.

Edit today to change name of ACE from Altamont Commuter Express to Altamont CORRIDOR Express as it was quietly renamed this past Spring. Its acronym stays the same! As for the smaller list of upcoming commuter rail operations, I surmise at the present time that Florida's SunRail will be the next to come online, and then it will be a race between SMART in California and the 3 lines in the Denver area as part of RTD's Eagle P3 project.

List has been edited as of May 2, 2014 to include the 5/1/14 startup of our nation's 25th commuter rail property, SunRail in the Orlando, FL area. SunRail was moved off the future listing to the present one.
