Fire destroys historic train station

 

CHICAGO -- Fire destroyed a historic Metra station this afternoon in Morgan Park.

 

Metra officials say today's fire was so bad the remains of the building at 115th street will likely have to be torn down.

It's believed the fire may have started in a garbage can, possibly by a lit cigarette.  .  .  .

Landmark Metra Depot At 115th Street To Be Torn Down After Fire

 

 

larger.jpg The Metra depot at 1982 W. 115th St. was destroyed May 28 by fire. The station was deemed a historic landmark in 1995.
 

MORGAN PARK —  The 115th Street Metra Depot that was damaged by fire will be demolished, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Thomas-Reile.

 

"Structural engineers have assessed the severe damage from the fire at the 115th Street/Morgan Park Station and determined that, unfortunately, the structure is damaged beyond repair," Reile said in a written statement Thursday.

The demolition will begin as soon as Metra receives the proper permits from the city — likely within a week, she said.

 

"Metra is extremely disappointed that this building cannot be saved, because we understand it has served as a community anchor for 125 years.  .  .  .

115th Street Metra Depot Damaged By Fire Will Be Torn Down Today

 

 

ORGAN PARK — The 115th Street Metra Depot will be razed Friday in Morgan Park.

 

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said late Thursday that removing train station that was severely damaged in a fire May 28 is an issue of public safety.

 

"Metra is extremely disappointed that this building cannot be saved because we understand it has served as a community anchor for 125 years," Gillis said in a written statement.

 

He also reaffirmed Metra's commitment to continue to stop at the station at 1982 W. 115th St.
