CTA to test late-night Purple Line Express train

After years of riders asking to extend Purple Line Express service beyond morning and evening rush hours, the CTA will be testing a late-night train this summer, the transit agency officials said this week.

Expanding the hours for Purple Line trains traveling to and from the Loop was one of the top suggestions mentioned in an Evanston transit survey last year, when residents were asked what would make them ride public transit more. CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase said the extra Purple Line service would benefit both commuters heading into and out of the city.

The six-week pilot, which will cost $7,000, will run June 1 through July 10, Chase said. The proposed new Purple Line train would leave the Linden stop in Wilmette at 8 p.m., arrive at the Clark/Lake Loop station at about 8:50 p.m., and return to the Linden station just before 10 p.m., said Ylda Capriccioso, assistant to the Evanston city manager.

Officials gear up behind later Purple Line Express service

Evanston officials are already talking about assembling a large group to greet a Chicago Transit Authority train when the agency kicks off a six-week pilot program June 1, testing interest in an additional evening round-trip Purple Line Express train between Wilmette's Linden Station and the Loop.

CTA officials agreed to launch the program, which is to start June 1 and run through July 10, in response to recent city surveys indicating strong interest in later train service.

For the service to continue past the pilot period, CTA officials are saying they want to see at least 468 people on the train or 39 people per car on a 6-car train during the experiment.

Just one train?  I don't see this test as adequate. The whole idea of a rapid transit line is that it is available on frequent headways.  To run just one train to test late night service excludes those potential customers who may not be able to make the one particular run in each direction.

And while they are at it, how about also trying a Yellow Line through train to provide service from Skokie directly to the Loop?   It's been running totally with third rail power for over a decade now, so the ages old practice of the Yellow Line (former Skokie Swift) being just a shuttle could be changed.

Evanston prepping for CTA Purple Line express pilot program

Evanston officials are preparing for a Purple Line Express evening pilot program that will test interest in extending the service beyond regular times.

Ylda Capriccioso, assistant to the city manager, recently provided members of the city's Transportation/Parking Committee with an overview of city efforts and some more details about the pilot program.

The program is to run from July 1(sic) through July 10. The pilot run would originate at Linden in Wilmette, make all local stops in Evanston and run express between Howard Street and Belmont Avenue.

Continue here.

The pilot program begins June 1, vice July 1 as stated in the article.

Chicago Tribune, 6/30:

Evanston officials ride Purple Line to boost later service, CTA measures interest

Andrew Sirjoosingh, a postdoctoral student in chemistry at Northwestern University, said he uses the Purple Line Express to get back and forth between Evanston and his residence in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood.

Usually, he said, he feels pressured to wrap up research work and catch the last express train out of Evanston. But now "that they're doing this option, it's added some flexibility,'' he said, riding an express service train home nearly an hour and a half later than usual.

SNIP

For the service to continue past the pilot dates, CTA officials have said they would like to see total usage of 468 people, or 39 people per car riding the later train.

Evanston officials, including Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl; Ald. Melissa Wynne, 3rd; Ald. Jane Grover, 7th; Ald. Ann Rainey, 8th, and City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz gathered at the Davis Street platform on a foggy Thursday night when the later express train arrived at 8:05 p.m.

Officials then rode the train from Davis Street through the Belmont stop, hoping to boost the numbers.

CTA says later Purple Line Express train failed pilot

Chicago Transit Authority officials announced Monday that the later Purple Line Express train won't go beyond the recently concluded trial period, saying ridership numbers didn't justify continuing the pilot program.

Here's more.
