Hydrogen fuel cell train to be developed with EU funding

EUROPE: The FCH2RAIL consortium’s €14m project to design, develop and test a prototype hydrogen fuelled train has been awarded a €10m grant from the European Commission’s Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Joint Undertaking as part of the Horizon 2020 Programme

FCH2RAIL aims to produce a zero-emission train offering an operating performance which is competitive with existing diesel trains, using technology which could be applied to both new and refurbished vehicles. The overall budget is €14m, of which 70% would come from EU funds, and the remainder from the project partners.

THE European-led FCH2RAIL project reached a milestone in early March with the conclusion of extensive running tests in Spain.

The 1668mm-gauge, three-car hydrogen-powered-multiple unit was based in Madrid for the early part of 2024. As one of the final tests, the train successfully operated for 804km without needing to refuel, running on the line from Madrid to Mérida via Cáceres.

The ex-Renfe CAF class 463 Civia EMU has been repurposed as a demonstrator train with hydrogen fuel cells and batteries.   . . .

FCH2Rail Bi-Mode Hydrogen Train Completes Tests in Portugal

The FCH2Rail project has completed testing of its bimodal hydrogen train on the rail network in Portugal.

Between 3 and 6 April, the demonstrator train with hydrogen fuel cells travelled on the Minho Line, making it the first hydrogen train to operate in Portugal.

With these tests, the FCH2Rail project obtained authorisation to operate the demonstrator in a second European country, following extended testing in Spain.
