WTOP radio, 7/1:

Service resumes after storms wash out VRE track support

WASHINGTON — What happened on Virginia Railway Express Wednesday morning?

The huge storms overnight washed out a huge pile of rocks that support a key track along a VRE line, leading to some delays.

VRE says trains were held in yards until inspectors could make sure the stretch of track between Franconia-Springfield and Alexandria was safe.  .  .  .

This Mornings Delays

We received notification this morning there was a potential washout of the railroad tracks north of Franconia/Springfield and prior to Alexandria.  In an effort to ensure the railroad was safe, we decided to hold all VRE trains at their origination yards until CSX track inspectors could assess the situation.  Since the early reports placed the incident near the area where the CSX and Norfolk Southern lines converge we chose to hold the VRE trains on both lines.  Once we received word only track 1 was affected, and we would be able to operate on our normal tracks, 2 and 3, we released all VRE trains.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Thank you for riding VRE.
