KPCC Radio, Los Angeles, CA, 4/26/17:

Metro narrowing route options for rail line from Union Station to Artesia

The Measure M sales tax increase approved by Los Angeles County voters last year will fund a massive expansion of rail in the county. This week, Metro will move forward with two of those projects.

The Metro board is winnowing down route options for two new train lines: One to push transit deeper into the eastern part of the county by extending the Gold Line from Atlantic Boulevard in East Los Angeles to South El Monte or Whittier. The other will connect Union Station with Artesia.

Proposed light-rail line to Whittier takes step forward with Metro board action

LOS ANGELES >> The newly proposed alternative light-rail line from East Los Angeles to Whittier took another step closer to becoming a reality Thursday with the Metro board’s vote to commission an environmental study of the project, which would need a tunnel to be dug underneath Atlantic Boulevard to be completed.

Pasadena, CA Star-News, 6/9/17:

Whittier’s light-rail hopes are on a roll

With light-rail lines expanding all over Los Angeles County, Whittier has still been in relative isolation from the possibility of train travel for rapid transit.

Sometimes it seems as if one of the oldest cities in Los Angeles County has been seen by transportation planners as an “isolated suburb” that doesn’t fit into their map-drawing.

Whittier, CA Daily News, 6/14/19:

Gold Line: Residents debate proposed light rail lines to South El Monte, Whittier

A proposed light rail line from East Los Angeles to either South El Monte or Whittier will help raise property values and make it easier for people without cars to commute downtown Los Angeles — or is an expensive boondoggle that will prompt homeowners to sell.

Progressive Railroading, 1/28/20:

LA Metro seeks input on Eastside light-rail routes

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) is seeking public input on three light-rail alternatives the agency is evaluating as part of the Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2 project that will extend the Gold Line.

Read

With the move to letter designations, if both of the Eastside options get built that would necessitate the use of 2 letters.   The Gold Line will initially get the letter L, to be retired when it becomes the E Line with completion of the downtown tunnel.  Maybe the L Line name will have to survive to designate the Whittier or El Monte options to avoid confusion.

Light-rail line to Whittier could get funding help from Newsom’s $1 billion proposal

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposal to provide an additional $1 billion for Los Angeles-area high-priority transportation projects to move people seamlessly in time for the Olympics in 2028 could provide another source of funds for the light-rail line planned to end in Whittier.

Potential funding shortfall could delay proposed light-rail line from reaching Whittier

The proposed light-rail line from East Los Angeles to Whittier might have to be constructed  in phases because it’s possible the $3 billion now budgeted may not be enough to fund the project, Metro officials said.
