PD: Railroad crossing malfunctions, car hit by train
MARICOPA, AZ (CBS5) - Two people in a car had quite a scary moment when a railroad crossing malfunctioned and they were hit by a train in Maricopa.
The Maricopa Police Department said rocks may have been kicked up from the service train and caused the warning signals to not work at Maricopa/Casa Grande Highway and Porter Road about 4 p.m. Thursday.
Comment: Most likely cause was a rules violation by the MOW crew. Most MOW equipment does not shunt track circuits thus the gates would not operate. I would expect the rules would have required the MOW crew to stop and flag the crossing if the crossing signals/gates were not operating.
