Sound Transit news release:

Sound Transit praises Senate’s progress on transportation package

February 13, 2015

Statement by Sound Transit Board Chair Dow Constantine

Sound Transit Board Chair and King County Executive Dow Constantine today issued the following statement on momentum in the Washington State Senate toward a statewide transportation plan that includes authority for local voters to consider regional transit expansions:

"The Sound Transit Board is encouraged that Senate leaders have proposed bipartisan solutions toward addressing congestion in the Central Puget Sound region."

"Our members will continue working with the Legislature for authority to allow people to vote on the full $15 billion that is required to create a truly regional mass transit network. Ours is one of the fastest growing regions in the nation. Expanding light rail and other regional transit services will help preserve the road capacity and freight mobility we need to fuel the state's trade-dependent economy."

"We are confident that by continuing the progress and collaboration now underway we will get there."

Sound Transit will continue seeking authority for robust regional transit expansion plan

March 3, 2015

Statements in response to the Senate's adoption of a transportation package

The chair and vice chairs of the Sound Transit Board issued the following statements today following the Washington State Senate's passage of a transportation package that includes partial funding authority needed for regional voters to consider a comprehensive Sound Transit 3 ballot measure.

Sound Transit Board Chair and King County Executive Dow Constantine

"I am pleased the Senate bill includes authority to expand light rail in the Central Puget Sound region. It remains critical that the Legislature provide Sound Transit the full funding authority it has requested. The current legislation caps funding at a level that could jeopardize the ability to connect major population centers with light rail."

Sound Transit Board Vice Chair and Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland

"From Tacoma to Everett and everywhere between, congestion-weary business owners and commuters understand the importance of increasing our transportation capacity. We applaud the Senate for taking the first step to address these critical needs, and urge legislators to provide Sound Transit's full authority request. By expanding transit options, we will move more people, encourage employers to locate and expand here, and create thousands of construction jobs."

Sound Transit Board Vice Chair and Everett City Council Member Paul Roberts

"The Central Puget Sound region is among the fastest growing areas in the nation and one of the nation's most significant manufacturing centers. Rising congestion threatens our ability to compete on a global scale. We appreciate the Senate's action as a first step toward providing the level of regional authority needed to extend the light rail spine to Paine Field and Everett, Tacoma and downtown Redmond while also serving Seattle's growing needs."

Seattle, WA Times, 4/17/15:

Inslee touts need for light rail, backs $15 billion to expand line

Gov. Jay Inslee took his bully pulpit underground Friday into the future University of Washington Station, to send a message that nothing less than $15 billion is acceptable to expand the regional light-rail network.

That number has created a stumbling block in Olympia, as lawmakers try for a third year to agree on a massive transportation package.

Sound Transit news release:

Sound Transit applauds House Transportation Committee bill with full authority for regional transit expansion

April 15, 2015

Statements in response to the House Transportation Committee's inclusion of Sound Transit's full authority request of $15 billion

The chair and vice chairs of the Sound Transit Board today issued the following statements following the Washington State House Transportation Committee's passage of a transportation package that includes the full $15 billion requested authority for regional voters to consider a comprehensive Sound Transit 3 ballot measure.

Sound Transit Board Chair and King County Executive Dow Constantine
"This action to provide the full $15 billion in funding authority gives voters the chance to bring light rail to Tacoma, Everett, downtown Redmond, Ballard and West Seattle. It's a great day for regional mobility. My thanks to the House Transportation Committee for taking this important step, and we now look to the full House and Senate to agree."

Sound Transit Board Vice Chair and Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland
"Today when a traveler arrives at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, she can take light rail to Seattle, but she can't take it to Tacoma. We need to change that, and provide relief for bus riders and drivers trapped in rising I-5 congestion. We applaud the House Transportation Committee for taking this important step and call on both chambers to advance the $15 billion in authority before adjourning."

Sound Transit Board Vice Chair and Everett City Council Member Paul Roberts
"In the last two years we've seen congestion delays on I-5 double. If we want to keep our economy moving we must move forward now with investments in congestion-free light rail. We hope the full House and Senate will agree with the House Transportation Committee's action to provide Sound Transit with the $15 billion in authority so we can finish the regional light rail spine and build other critical projects."
