Yet another small step to normalcy! Here comes full service on the Raritan Valley Line. From Newark, NJ Star-Ledger, 12/12/12:

NJ Transit restores Raritan Valley line to full service Monday

NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line, operating on a modified schedule since trains began running again following Hurricane Sandy, returns to full service on Monday morning, officials said.

This is the full story.

NBC New York, 12/13/12:

Hoboken Station 2-Plus Months from Electric Power

NJ Transit's Hoboken station will be without electrical power for at least another two months while an interim substation is being completed, executive director James Weinstein said Thursday at a board meeting in which he faced more public criticism for the agency's pre- and post-Sandy performance.

Story is here.

Another example of the media not knowing what they are talking about. The story is about NJT's commuter rail station, yet the photo at the top, and the video you see when you click on it, shows the flooded PATH station. And even whoever created the URL for the article, it includes PATH.

NJT's electric subsation problem has nothing to do with PATH's problems, though their roots are similar: Salt water going where it shouldn't have.

One barely noticeable issue on Newark LRT at Penn Station is now resolved:

Dec 15, 2012 09:19:31 AM
Elevators at Newark Penn Light Rail Station have been returned to full service, with elevator access to Platform 2 and Platform 4.

NJ TRANSIT Cross-Honoring With PATH Ends on the HBLR - Effective Saturday, December 22, 2012

December 20, 2012

Effective Saturday, December 22, NJ TRANSIT will no longer honor PATH tickets on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service between Hoboken and Exchange Place.

Huh? As I said in the PATH thread, one cannot ride PATH between Hoboken and any point in NJ until the last connection is repaired and reopened. So just as NJT took well over a month after the storm to institute this policy, now they are taking it away prematurely. Sure PATH is now open at Hoboken, but you cannot ride to Exchange Place without going into NYC. And you can't do it at all after 10 PM.

What's the big deal about allowing people to ride without fare on HBLRT ? Chances are, under normal circumstances, people do it anyhow every day if the fare inspectors happen to be elsewhere at the time.

I wonder who has been making all these ill decisions? Oh wait that's right, the same ones who left the rail cars & locomotives in Hoboken to be flooded. Pardon me for wondering.

And now, they have backtracked on the plan to end cross honoring of PATH tickets on HBLRT, instead putting this up:

Dec 21, 2012 01:27:33 PM
Hudson Bergen Light Rail will cross-honor PATH tickets/passes between Hoboken and Exchange Place until further notice.

The sub-plot to the Sandy devastation that may never die. From the Bergen Record, 12/25/12:

Report warned NJ Transit officials of flood risk

A report on climate change completed for NJ Transit months before superstorm Sandy struck New Jersey urged the agency to begin planning for higher storm surges that could envelop rail yards, destroy track beds and corrode switches, gates and signals.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail: Enhanced Weekend Service on Saturday, January 5 and Sunday, January 6, 2013

January 03, 2013

On Saturday, January 5 and Sunday, January 6, PATH will be out of service between Hoboken and 33rd Street due to track repairs. NJ TRANSIT will cross-honor PATH tickets on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR).

Light rail customers should note that HBLR will operate on an enhanced weekend service between Hoboken and Exchange Place on the weekend of January 5-6. During this time, customers should allow for extra travel time and may experience overcrowding.

HBLR enhanced weekend service will be as follows:

Before 8 a.m. – 20 minute frequency
8 a.m. to 9 p.m. – 10 minute frequency
9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. – 20 minute frequency
For more information, visit http://panynj.gov/path

Well OK, except that they don't tell the full story. The ONLY PATH line operating will be Newark-WTC. The Hoboken-33 AND Journal Square-33 lines will both be out over the weekend, meaning that Hoboken and Newport stations will both be closed, as will all New York stations in the Midtown line.
