Transportation and Infrastructure Daily, 5/23/15:

S.F. subway system to launch double-stop feature at 3 stations

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA) said on Thursday that double stopping begins on Sunday, May 24, in select subway stations.

The double-stopping feature schedules two trains to make stops and pick up passengers simultaneously.

Here is the story.

SEPTA uses this for its Regional Rail trains at Suburban and Jefferson Stations. There are "A" and "B" sections on those platforms.   But.....

The first train will pull as far forward as possible to allow passengers to enter and exit the train, then the second train will pull directly behind and allow passengers to exit the train. As the first train departs, the second one will take its place and allow passengers to board.

On a city transit system, and given these are light rail vehicles with multiple doors, just how will they stop people from boarding trains at the designated discharge stops?  Guaranteed somebody who really wants to get a seat will rush onto the second train before its official pick-up stop.

Here is a YouTube video of an underground stop for streetcars at Toronto Union Station. The first stop is for unloading and the second is for loading. There is asimple barricade between but, since Canadians are courteous to a fault, they would probably obey without it.

SF'ist, 5/5/16:

Muni Will FINALLY Allow Two Trains In A Station At Once, Soon

After years of trying and failing to make this work, Muni is finally (maybe) getting close to allowing "double stopping" or "double berthing" in downtown Muni stations, thereby alleviating some computer-created congestion in the Metro system's tunnels.

Update
