Via Rail resumes travel from Winnipeg to Gillam after floods

 

Via Rail is resuming travel to some parts of Northern Manitoba after floods prevented all trains from travelling north of Thompson, the Crown corporation announced Tuesday.

Train to Churchill suspended after 'catastrophic' flood damage to track

 

The only train to Churchill has been suspended until winter — maybe even next spring — and its future is in jeopardy after severe flooding damaged the tracks on the way to the northern Manitoba community.

Suspension of Churchill's only rail line forcing business owners to lay off workers

 

At least five workers in the Town of Churchill have been let go after the only train into the northern Manitoba community suspended its service, and business owners are warning more layoffs could be afoot.hat one

Via figuring out how to retrieve train from Churchill cut off by rail closure

 

 

Most of the talk since rail service to Churchill in northern Manitoba was indefinitely interrupted by washouts and other track damage last month has focused on how to get goods and tourists in to the remote Hudson Bay community.

 

Via Rail has a different problem — how to get one of its trains out.

CHURCHILL, Manitoba — The last train to Churchill sits beside the town’s antique station, settling into place week after week.

 

It arrived on May 23, the morning when floods washed out the track connecting this frontier town in northern Manitoba on the edge of Hudson Bay — and it hasn’t moved since.

 

Once a symbol of expansion and hope, the passenger train has become a painful emblem of lost jobs, empty hotel rooms and mounting hunger for the town’s residents, and a bellwether of climate change for scientists.
