Service Update for Friday, May 29, 2015
The operation experienced solid performance gains this week while still contending with challenging weather conditions in many locations. System velocity was up across all business units and good fluidity was maintained throughout the network. While severe weather has impacted many of the same areas repeatedly over the past several weeks, our operations team continues to take aggressive steps to mitigate service disruptions as much as possible.
Record rainfall, particularly in north Texas and Oklahoma, has caused washouts on several subdivisions affecting north-south traffic. The Creek Subdivision, which runs between Tulsa and Madill in southern Oklahoma, remains out of service, with more than two miles of track underwater at this time. In response, we have implemented procedures, including the re-routing of traffic, to minimize service impacts while crews address the affected area.
More strong storms, with accompanying high winds and heavy rain, are expected through the weekend. Speed restrictions and more frequent track inspections will remain in effect on five subdivisions in Texas and Oklahoma. However, a changing pattern is expected to bring much drier, calmer weather to these areas next week and a return to more normal operations.
Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending May 26:
Total trains held for the week increased by 3.5 percent to an average of 87.9 versus 84.9 recorded the prior week.
- Versus the same week last year: better by 66.3%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 21.2%
Total trains on the system was unchanged from the prior week with an average of 1,599 trains on the system.
Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 274.1, which is up by more than two percent from the prior week's 267.6 MPD.
Locomotive dwell decreased by seven percent from the prior week at 17.3 hours.
Car velocity was up by 2.5 percent at 215.1 MPD versus 209.9 MPD recorded the prior week.

Versus the same week in 2013: better by 2.7%
Train velocity was up 3.5 percent from the prior week at 17.9 miles per hour.

Versus the same week in 2013: down by 1.7%
Total volume was up slightly from the prior week with 196,786 units moved in Week 20 (ending May 23).
Terminal dwell increased by 0.4 percent to 24.3 hours versus 24.2 hours the prior week.
