What Metro ridership looked like during the blizzard— in two charts
It’s been a month since the blizzard and you’ve almost forgotten about the mounds of snow that were piled in front of your bus stop. So we’re here to remind you of those freezing days, and show you what the Metro system looked like that week.
The complete shutdown of the transit system for two consecutive days was a rare occurrence. It is believed to been the longest closure in Metro’s 40-year history. The system closed for about 36 hours during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012.
So it was a big deal and in terms of ridership. The closure, along with the gradual restoration of the service resulted in losses of 2.9 million boardings over five days, according to Metro.
