Charlotte to move Amtrak station uptown with federal grant

The city plans to move the Amtrak train station on North Tryon Street to a new location uptown in three or four years, a move helped by a $25 million federal grant that U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced Thursday.

At first, the uptown station near West Trade Street would have a platform, temporary waiting room and ticketing area.

Eventually, the city hopes to convert that site into Gateway Station, a home to Amtrak, a commuter rail line to Lake Norman, inter-city and transit buses and the streetcar. The station would be distinctive architecturally, and boosters have said it would serve as a Grand Central Station for the city.

Charlotte, NC Observer, 8/12/16:

CATS unsure if it will build temporary Amtrak station uptown

The Charlotte Area Transit System is moving forward with plans to build Gateway Station uptown for Amtrak, local buses and possibly commuter rail, but it’s unclear if the transit system will build a temporary station as first planned.

Story is here.   2021 !!!!!    Never figured it would take that long for the permanent station to be ready for use.  Being still 5 years away after all this time they probably should do the temporary station. They really need to get out of that dump a mile north of downtown.   The existing station won't even be near a station on the under construction Blue Line extension,  and it would not make sense to have one given that the current Amtrak station won't be there in a few years.

And would you believe the 2021 date has slipped ANOTHER 3 years to 2024?  Here it comes........

WBTV-TV, Channel 3 in Charlotte, NC, 5/19/17:

Amtrak was supposed to be in downtown Charlotte in a year or two. The new date: 2024.

In October 2015, Anthony Foxx, former U.S. transportation secretary, awarded Charlotte a $30 million federal grant to build a new Amtrak station uptown, known as Charlotte Gateway Station.

In a celebratory trip to Charlotte, Foxx said he “saw no reason” why the city couldn’t hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a temporary station in 18 months.

An uptown train station for Amtrak? It’s still alive, Charlotte planner reassures

Plans to build a train station uptown and move Amtrak service from its cramped quarters on North Tryon Street are still alive and moving forward, a Charlotte Area Transit System official told city leaders last week, though plenty of questions remain.

Charlotte, NC Observer, 7/16/18:

Charlotte’s breaking ground on a new uptown train station this week

Charlotte officials plan to break ground Friday on the first part of Gateway Station, the long-planned but slow-to-come train station that would restart passenger rail service to uptown — but it will still be four years, or more, before the first trains roll in.

This is where the story is.
