WMATA news release  11/22/17:

Metro reminds Red Line customers of major capital improvement project starting Saturday

Metro is reminding Red Line customers of a major capital improvement project starting Saturday, November 25, and continuing through Sunday, December 10. There will be no Red Line train service between Silver Spring and Fort Totten and the Takoma Station will be closed to replace a mainline interlocking, a location where trains cross from one track to the other.

The project, announced last spring, will impact 10 commuting days and was scheduled between Thanksgiving and the winter holidays when ridership is lighter.

During this time, limited free shuttle buses will replace trains between Silver Spring and Fort Totten for customers with no other travel alternatives. Customers should allow additional travel time and expect some crowding as trains will arrive less frequently than normal.

SERVICE INFORMATION

  • Red Line trains will operate in two segments:
    • Glenmont - Silver Spring every 12 minutes
    • Shady Grove - Fort Totten every 10 minutes (every 5 minutes between Grosvenor and NoMa-Gallaudet during weekday peak periods)
  • Takoma Station closed. No parking available. The Park & Ride lot, Kiss & Ride and all metered spaces will be closed to the public.
  • After 9:30 p.m. trains will operate every 15 minutes.

On the weekend of December 2-3, the work zone will be extended to Glenmont to accommodate the installation of radio communication cables and additional preventive maintenance. Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring will also be closed. Limited free shuttle buses will be available between the closed stations. Customers traveling between Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring stations should also consider using regular Y- or Q-line service along Georgia Avenue.
