Alaska Railroad Corporation Obtains Grant, Plans Future of Terminal and Port of Seward

ARRC has received a grant of $2.5 million from US Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) to create a “master land-use plan” for the Seward Marine Terminal and surrounding 328 acres of railroad-reserve tidelands and uplands. ARRC contributed $500,000 as matching funds to the project it calls “Seward Marine Terminal Expansion Planning”. According to Christy Terry, ARRC’s manager of dock operations in Seward, the planning will center on the west dock (passenger dock) and will require three studies that may take as long as two years to complete. A study of overall connectivity, freight traffic and passenger traffic will enable creation of the master plan. Terry explained that because of the importance of the Seward terminal to Alaska and the large investments involved, the project envisions railroad operations out to some 50 years.
