Second Avenue Sagas, 11/27/13:

The slow lumbering ball that is the PATH train extension to Newark airport took another turn forward this week amidst some wheeling and dealing concerning Atlantic City. The stories and rationale are vague, and the extension’s future remains murky. But no matter the outcome, various reported cost estimates that have risen precipitously over the past 14 months should have even the project’s proponents eying it with some skepticism.

Continue

Remember this "PATH extension to the airport" would only go to the same off-airport station that NJT commuter trains and Amtrak now serve, and then people would need to transfer to the AirTrain monorail.

It's a little confusing how one airline's agreement to serve Atlantic City would equate to a PATH extension to the AirTrain station in Newark, since such an extension would serve all airlines that use Newark Airport. And with PATH being a bistate agency, the Governors of both New Jersey and New York have to sign off on it. There would not be any flights from Newark to Atlantic City; clearly Gov. Christie should want people to travel by train within the state via Trenton and Pennsauken.

The answer to the question "how much" is right here. From Daily News, 2/4/14:

Port Authority to spend $1.5 billion to extend PATH service to Newark Airport by 2024

A project that would allow for a single train ride between Manhattan and Newark Airport has finally received the funding needed to get on track.

A Port Authority committee released a 10-year capital plan on Tuesday that includes $1.5 billion to construct an extension that would bring PATH train service into the New Jersey airport.

To repeat my comments above, no it WON'T go into the airport -- it will stop at the Newark Airport RAIL station across the highway from the airport. One still will need to use the AirTrain.

And one CAN go from Manhattan to the same station with a one-seat ride by taking NJT or Amtrak trains. Article is here.

Let's see if they stick to the 10 years (which seems a bit much for a two-mile project), or if the date slips even later.

And I see that Second Avenue Sagas agrees with me in this Tweet:

Seat #1: PATH to Newark Liberty Int'l Airport train station. Seat #2: Newark AirTrain to the airport terminals. 2! 2 seats! AH AH AH AH AH

Second Avenue Sagas, 2/4/14:

Port Authority unveils $1.5 billion PATH-EWR plans

Every time someone — the Port Authority, a media leak, anyone — discusses plans to extend the PATH train from Newark Penn Station to the airport a few miles away, the price goes up. When the plan first surfaced in September of 2012, the agency anticipated spending $600 million on design and construction.

Technically the Airlink (and the proposed PATH) part of the Newark Airport Rail Station are located on Airport owned land. Without it being so they would not have been able to use the air passenger fee money to build the Airlink monorail. Incidentally this is just a truncated part of an original plan to extend PATH to Plainfield via Elizabeth Broad Street, which did not come to pass.

For the $1.5 billion one might expect that the line would be getting to Elizabeth and Plainfield. IIRC one reason it didn't work out was that it was considered to be duplicative, with frequent enough service on the NJT NEC line to Elizabeth, and on the Raritan Valley Line to Plainfield.

The potential PATH right-of-way is evident at the Newark Airport station, in between the Amtrak tracks and the monorail. I'm not sure however if entryways were penciled into the structure when it was built. If it were to go to Plainfield, it would run on the old CNJ right-of-way west of Elizabeth. However, that stretch is now pegged for a busway (BRT) route to eventually be developed by NJT,

Column in Star-Ledger, Newark, NJ, 6/20/14:

A PATH to Newark Airport would kick many cars off the road

To get to or from Newark Liberty International Airport, travelers generally have to pick their poison: a stressful slog by car, bus or taxi, or a potentially long wait for an intermittent, crowded NJ Transit train.

Second Avenue Sagas, 10/5/14:

Is the PATH extension to Newark Airport another Port Authority boondoggle?

If most transit-minded folk in the Tri-State area had $1.5 billion to spend, an extension of the PATH train to Newark Airport wouldn’t be high on the list of priorities. With that money, most people would add to the pot for a new trans-Hudson rail tunnel, take a look at investing in another phase of the Second Ave. Subway, explore a subway extension to Laguardia Airport, begin the Triboro RX line or look to one of any number of other projects. The Port Authority of course chose the airport extension.

PANYNJ OKs study for proposed PATH extension to Newark airport

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) on Wednesday awarded a three-year, $6 million contract to HNTB Corp. to study a proposed extension of the PATH rail line to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

The problems with PATH’s planned Newark extension

Late December is always a good time to remember how tough it can be to get to and from the region’s airports. We’re constantly reminded of Gridlock Alert Days, and travelers heading out of town for the holidays have to leave extra time for traveling just to get somewhere to travel. It is also a time for the Global Gateway Alliance, a group nobly lobbying for better regional airports, to remind us of the deficiencies of the region’s airport.

I am not so certain I like the idea of any intermediate PATH stops between Newark Penn and Newark Airport Rail Station.  While such a station stop might be of benefit to people headed to Hudson County and New York City from Newark's South Ward, those people going to the airport might better be served by bus service.  A stop will also slow down the trip for somebody going to the airport from Hudson County or New York City, whose travel is time sensitive.

Second Avenue Sagas, 9/21/15:

As United investigation continues, what future the Newark PATH extension?

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is continuing his push for the White House as trouble circles a few of his pet projects back at home. As an outgrowth of the investigation into the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal, United Airlines’ CEO and two of the airlines’ top executives resigned, and the feds haven’t closed the books on potential criminal charges. In the background — or perhaps the foreground of this mess — is the Port Authority and the planned PATH extension to the Newark Airport train stop.
