Newark Liberty International Airport Station Closed - Newark Airport Station AirTrain Service Suspended - Substitute Shuttle Bus Service Provided

Effective May 1, 2014

Attention Amtrak Passengers:

Effective May 1, 2014 and continuing through the summer, rail service to and from Newark Liberty

International Airport station (EWR) will be suspended to allow the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to perform critical repair work to AirTrain, which links the rail station to the airport. Substitute shuttle bus service will be available in both directions between Newark Penn Station and the airport.

Booking Travel to/from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Passengers should utilize the normal booking methods (Amtrak.com, Quik-Trak, Amtrak mobile apps, etc.) to and from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). For passengers going to the airport, the system will indicate rail travel to Newark Penn Station and a connecting service to the airport. For passengers leaving the airport, the system will indicate connecting service from the airport to Newark Penn Station and rail service to their destination.

Getting to/from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

* Amtrak passengers traveling to the airport will detrain at Newark Penn Station, where Port Authority shuttle buses will provide service from the station to each airport terminal. Shuttle service will be free of charge to passengers who present the bus driver with a ticket/travel document designating travel to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
* Amtrak passengers at the airport will board Port Authority shuttle buses to Newark Penn Station, where they may board the train. Shuttle service will be free of charge to passengers who present the bus driver with an Amtrak ticket/travel document designating travel from the airport to Newark Penn Station. Please note that passengers may board any available shuttle bus and will not need to wait for the scheduled departure printed on their ticket.
* Personnel and signage will be available at Newark Penn Station and at the airport to provide assistance and direction.

Travel Time

While actual bus travel times will vary, travel between Newark Penn Station and the airport typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. Amtrak schedules indicate a 50 minute travel time to and from the airport to account for unanticipated driving delays.

Thank you for traveling with Amtrak. We appreciate your patronage and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience. Reservation and train status information is available on Amtrak.com, our free mobile apps and at 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245).

So if you were to book a trip to or from Newark Airport from another location, you would get a rail trip plus a Thruway bus ticket as well. Apparently the Port Authority bus will honor anything (e-tickets, etc.) that is honored on the train (unlike the Norfolk-Newport News Thruway bus that has to be a paper Amtrak ticket). The buses from Newark Penn to the airport are in the 5200-series in Amtrak's inventory, and the buses from the airport to Newark Penn are in the 5300-series. But don't expect an extra trip segment to be scanned, since the regular monorail trips don't provide you with that privilege. What may appear to stink is that you're paying the Monorail surcharge of $5.50 built into your Amtrak train fare, but you instead get a long bus ride in lieu of the Monorail. But if looked at in the context of what the AirLink bus used to cost (both privately and when NJ TRANSIT operated it), it comes out cheaper. This can't be a good thing especially with the nearby Pulaski Skyway closure, since more traffic is already in the area. The buses could need every bit of the 50 minutes they allocated on the schedule. Heads up to Bill Magee, just in case anyone decides to use Amtrak to go to or from the airport during the time the monorail is down. And BTW this will create havoc with the United Airlines codeshare. Now instead of a train + plane it will be a train + bus + plane.
