The Bakersfield Californian, 9/14/17:

Amtrak reducing service from Bakersfield, shifting a train north in search of business travelers

Amtrak service from Bakersfield is changing.

In January, Bakersfield will lose one of its seven train connections as the agency that oversees the system implements changes designed to reverse a slide in ridership.

Fresno will benefit from Bakersfield’s loss.

It will gain a train service that will connect business travelers to Sacramento by 8 a.m. — in time to hold business meetings and lobby legislators in the state capital.

Manteca, CA Bulletin, 10/28/17:

Amtrak eyes commute service to Sacramento

San Joaquin Valley commuters to Sacramento will be able to reach the Capital City work days before 8 a.m. under a new Amtrak Morning Express Service expected to launch on January.

The service would board passengers at the Bob Cabral station near downtown Stockton that also serves as the current northern terminus of the Altamont Corridor Express that carries commuters into the East Bay as far south as San Jose and the job-rich Silicon Valley.

The new schedule is now posted on Amtrak's site.   It takes effect on May 7, 2018.   What is happening is that the new morning Fresno-Sacramento train will get the numbers 701 on weekdays, and 1701 on weekends (running about 50 minutes later than on weekdays).  The bus connection up from Los Angeles to Bakersfield will be extended to Fresno to meet the train.... Thruways 5801 on weekdays and 5851 on weekends.  Filling the old 701 midday slot will be 703.  And the evening trip (formerly 703) that ran from Bakersfield to Sacramento is eliminated, though still possible using an Oakland-bound train to Stockton and then a Thruway bus.

In the other direction, few significant changes except that the last Oakland-Bakersfield train of the day, 718, will terminate in Fresno.   Its Thruway connection to Los Angeles, 5818, will now begin in Fresno meeting the train. This provides the equipment in Fresno for the next day's 701/1701.

Fresno, CA Bee, 5/7/18:

Amtrak's Morning Express gets you to Sacramento before 8 a.m.

Amtrak California's Amtrak San Joaquin line added an eighth daily northbound train that will get business travelers and other passengers to Sacramento before 8 a.m. A train that can get people to the state capital in time to conduct business has been under consideration for a couple of years.

Fact Check:  Incorrect.   There was NO 8th frequency added.   It's still 2 trains to Sacramento and 5 to Oakland, which from distant memory of my school days equals 7.  The late night former 703 was effectively cancelled, and the new morning run is in its place as 701/1701, with the former midday 701 becoming the new 703.

The morning train will continue on to Davis, arriving about 9 a.m.

Fact check:  Incorrect.  It terminates, as all Sacramento-bound San Joaquins do, at Sacramento.  The timetable shows the arrival time in Davis of a connecting Capitol Corridor train.
