Fort Madison, IA Daily Democrat, 1/17/17:

Construction of Amtrak platform may begin soon

Even though many people are anxious to see the Amtrak stop moved to the refurbished Santa Fe train station, some people thought it was taking far too long to build a platform and would never happen. Fortunately, these nay-sayers could soon be proven wrong.

Fort Madison looking to move Amtrak location downtown

FORT MADISON, Ia. (WGEM) - The City of Fort Madison wants to move the location of its Amtrak stop.

The move promises improvements for both passengers and local businesses.

The Santa Fe Depot on South 10th Street is where the city wants to relocate the Amtrak stop.

Nearby businesses agree with the city's idea.

"It was restored a number of years ago and it was restored for that purpose," City Manager David Varley said. "We have raised it and brought it above the flood plane. It would be nice to have Amtrak stop at a historic location."

Fort Madison Amtrak project could be back on track

The Fort Madison Amtrak project that would construct a new depot platform at the Santa Fe Complex in Riverview Park could be back on track, with additional funding possibly coming from the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Update here.

Since the last news broke about the possible station relocation, Fort Madison lost its ticket agent along with many others.  I wonder if they would get the agent back with the new facility. It would be silly to build a ticket window into a new or renovated building if it would never be used.

Fort Madison officials will step off an Amtrak train on Dec. 10 as the first passengers to be dropped off at the relocated Amtrak depot at 6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting at 6:30 p.m. The community is invited to come out to the reception that is set to start at about 6 p.m. with fireworks, bands, speakers and refreshments. FORT MADISON – It’s been a long road, and not without controversy, but Fort Madison city officials will step off onto the new Amtrak Depot next Friday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.

Fort Madison Mayor Matt Mohrfeld is welcoming the entire community out to witness the ribbon cutting of the new Amtrak Depot on the east side of the refurbished North Lee County Historical Museum in Riverview Park next week.

SNIP

Several different lease agreements between Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Amtrak, and the city were written and rewritten and rewritten before eventually going back to an original agreement that requires a manned ticket booth inside the depot.

But with all that in the city’s rearview mirror, Mohrfeld and about 14 other dignitaries will board the train Friday morning on the 10th and take the train into Galesburg for lunch and a short stay to look at the Galesburg railroad district. Then the group will reboard the train and head back to Fort Madison where they will step off onto the platform, kicking off the celebration.

Continue here.

Note:  3(8) made a brief 'crew training stop' at the new station tonight.  The conductor and some crew members opened doors and checked the trains positioning on the platform.

FT. MADISON, Iowa (KHQA) — All aboard! Passenger rail service is returning to Ft. Madison's riverfront.

Since the inception of Amtrak in 1971, Southwest Chief Trains 3 & 4 and others have stopped at what is now BNSF Railway building just west of the central business district in Ft. Madison. Predecessor Santa Fe Railway relocated to that rail yard in 1968, which means Amtrak has never served the downtown location in Ft. Madison, but that's about to change.

SNIP

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the first-ever Amtrak service in downtown Fort Madison will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10. The station is located at 810 10th Street, Suite 1, Ft. Madison, and the public is invited.
