New Orleans Service Modified Due to Hurricane Forecast

July 10, 2019 4:30 PM

Routes in each direction affected into this weekend

Amtrak has modified service to and from New Orleans due to the forecasted arrival of hurricane-force storms this weekend. No substitute transportation is available between New Orleans and the points where these routes will temporarily originate and terminate.

  • Trains 1 & 2, the Amtrak Sunset Limited, ordinarily operates between New Orleans and Los Angeles three days weekly. Through this Sunday, July 14, these trains will terminate and originate in San Antonio.

  •

  • Trains 19 & 20, the Amtrak Crescent, ordinarily operates daily between New Orleans and New York City. This Friday and Saturday, July 12 and 13, these trains will terminate and originate in Atlanta.

  •

  • Trains 58 & 59, the Amtrak City of New Orleans, ordinarily operates daily between New Orleans and Chicago. This Friday and Saturday, July 12 & 13, these trains will terminate and originate in Jackson, Miss.

Anyone planning to travel should check their train status on Amtrak.com or our smartphone apps prior to departing, allow extra time to get to the station and be extremely careful in stations and on platforms.

Customers with reservations on trains that are being modified will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day. Amtrak will gladly waive additional charges for customers looking to change their reservation during the modified schedule by calling our reservation center at 800-USA-RAIL.

Anyone can subscribe to automated email or text message notifications if Amtrak trains are behind schedule at specific stations. Notifications can be given for up to six trains and stations by either text or email and delivered when you choose - on a single day, every day, or just certain days of the week. Create a subscription at Amtrak.com/DelayAlerts.

Customers with travel plans can review refund information on Amtrak.com. Service Alerts, Passenger Notices and other announcements are posted at Amtrak.com/Alerts.

Amtrak regrets any inconvenience. This information is correct as of the above time and date. Information is subject to change as conditions warrant.

The part above about 58/59 I am not sure about.  There is still an alert up elsewhere on Amtrak's site labeled "until further notice" that the City of New Orleans was already originating & terminating at Jackson, MS due to the Bonne Carre Spillway being opened.  With ongoing flooding issues affecting the Mississippi River, I don't think they had closed it allowing resumption of service to & from New Orleans.  So this announcement would be nothing new for that train.  They're going to have a whole new issue if water backwashes up the river should the area be in the northeastern quadrant of Barry when he goes ashore. I have a feeling we may not see trains returning to New Orleans any time soon.

Relative to my comments above, now the City of New Orleans was cut back from Jackson to Memphis.

New Orleans Service Restoration Plan

July 15, 2019 11:30 AM

All routes back in service this week

Amtrak is restoring all services to and from New Orleans following the passing of Hurricane Barry. The service origination dates and directions are below.

Trains 1 & 2, the Amtrak Sunset Limited, ordinarily operates between New Orleans and Los Angeles three days weekly. Effective with the eastbound departure of Train 2 from Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 17, and the westbound departure of Train 1 from New Orleans on Saturday, July 20, full service is planned.

Trains 19 & 20, the Amtrak Crescent, ordinarily operates daily between New Orleans and New York City. Effective with the westbound departure of Train 19 from New York today (July 15) and the eastbound departure of Train 20 from New Orleans tomorrow (July 16), full service is planned.

Trains 58 & 59, the Amtrak City of New Orleans, ordinarily operates daily between New Orleans and Chicago. Effective with the southbound departure of Train 59 from Chicago tonight (July 15) and northbound departure of Train 58 tomorrow (July 16), service is planned to and from Jackson, Miss.

Amtrak has resumed providing substitute transportation by chartered buses between Jackson and New Orleans. The freight railroad that owns, maintains and dispatches the route has temporarily closed that segment to Amtrak service.

Anyone planning to travel should check their train status on Amtrak.com or our smartphone apps prior to departing, allow extra time to get to the station and be extremely careful in stations and on platforms.

Customers with reservations on trains that are being modified will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day.

Not quite normal service.  The Bonnet Carre Spillway has remained open since May, with no end in sight before the summer is over. Thus 58/59 remains the City of Jackson.
