Daily Herald, Arlington Heights, IL 7/1/17:

About 40,000 gallons of crude oil leak after derailment

As many as 25 railroad tanker cars derailed early Friday evening in Plainfield, resulting in a leak of about 40,000 gallons of crude oil, according to Plainfield police.

The derailment disrupted traffic, as the rest of the train continues to block several crossings, Plainfield Police Sgt. Mike Fisher said.

No one was hurt, he said, and firefighters managed to keep the oil from flowing in to the DuPage River, he said.

Crews Work to Clean Oil Spill After Train Derails in Plainfield

Crews continued to work Saturday at containing and cleaning an oil spill after a freight train derailed in suburban Plainfield.

The derailment occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. Friday near 143rd St. east of Van Dyke Rd., authorities said.

Twenty cars of the 115-car Canadian National Railway train derailed and two, possibly three, were punctured in the crash, according to a spokesman for the agency.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimated that around 45,000 gallons of crude oil leaked into the surrounding area, though officials said there it did not impact nearby waterways, including the DuPage River.

DeSmog Blog, 7/13/17:

“We Got Lucky” - Four Years After Lac-Megantic, Another Oil Train Accident

We were very lucky in this instance,” Plainfield Fire Chief David Riddle said. “There was no fire, nobody got hurt by the grace of God.”

As the residents of Lac-Megantic were preparing to acknowledge the 4th anniversary of the oil train disaster that leveled and poisoned their downtown and killed 47 people, residents of Plainfield, Illinois were happy to just be complaining about the odor of spilled oil after a train pulling 115 tank cars of Canadian crude oil derailed near their neighborhood.

According to media reports 20 of the tank cars derailed with at least two punctured, resulting in an oil spill of approximately 40,000 gallons. Ironically the local river may have been protected thanks to the continued expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure in America. The majority of the oil ended up in a ditch near the tracks destined for a new natural gas pipeline.

This latest lucky break comes just over a year after DeSmog published an article titled “Luck Rides the Rails” about the oil train derailment, spill and fire in Mosier, Oregon in which we detailed the numerous close calls that have occurred with oil train derailments.

The Herald-News, Joliet, IL 9/29/17:

Nicor files complaint against CN stemming from Plainfield oil spill

Natural gas company claims CN is blocking completion of pipeline project

PLAINFIELD – A disagreement was bound to happen.

Nicor Gas and CN are now in a legal dispute in Cook County Court regarding the cause, and fallout, from a June 30 train derailment in Plainfield that caused tankers to lose more than 30,000 gallons of crude oil near the DuPage River.

Though no one would say definitively at the time, CN’s followup investigation into the derailment – submitted to the Federal Railway Administration – blame’s Nicor and its contractor, who were working on reconstruction of a pipeline, for weakening the soil near and underneath the railroad and names it as the cause of the derailment.

SNIP

“It is imperative that Nicor Gas be allowed to install the replacement pipe or temporarily reconnect and safety test the existing pipeline by Oct. 15 in order to meet the natural gas needs of more than 250,000 customers who rely on natural gas during the winter heating season,” Nicor said.
