Railway Age, 7/27/17:

End of an era: GE moving locomotive production out of Erie

Leading locomotive manufacturer General Electric is shifting production of its diesel-electric locomotives from its facility in Erie, Pa., to Texas, and cutting 575 jobs.

The company in a statement said the move comes on domestic sales of locomotives that have dropped 10%, and higher international orders.

Classic Trains "Mileposts" blog, 7/31/17:

Erie’s memorable machines

I’d visited a number of big railroad facilities by the time I first set eyes on General Electric’s sprawling factory complex in Erie, Pa., in the late 1990s, but I was still awestruck by the view driving along E. Lake Road in the city’s Lawrence Park neighborhood.

There, spread over hundreds of acres, were more than 20 separate buildings, some of them gigantic, all linked in various ways for the singular purpose of building locomotives. It’s what I imagined Baldwin in Eddystone might have looked like, or Alco in Schenectady, back in the heyday of the steam locomotive.

Erie and GE had steam-era longevity, that’s for sure. The company began manufacturing at the site back in 1910.

Erie (PA) Times-News, 12/24/18:

GE locomotive production to continue in Erie, for now

The company, which had repeatedly stood by its plan to end locomotive production by the end of the year — while continuing to manufacture components in Erie — acknowledges that things have changed.

The year ahead seems likely to be one of seismic change for GE Transportation.

But there’s one change that appears unlikely to happen on schedule and as planned, and that’s good news for the union workforce at the century-old GE Transportation plant in Erie.

The company had announced in July 2017 that it would end all locomotive production in Erie by the end of this year, moving all normal U.S. locomotive production to Fort Worth, Texas, and eliminating 575 jobs in Erie.

But locomotives are still being built in Erie and there are no immediate plans to stop.
