From Trains Magazine news wire 11/5/03:
QUOTE BURBANK, Calif. – Expect a renamed Amtrak and Metrolink commuter agency station stop very soon. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority in Southern California voted yesterday to rename their airport, universally known as “Burbank Airport,” to Bob Hope Airport, in honor of the late comedian who used it frequently as a starting point for his many trips and USO tours. The rest of the story is here, but you need to scroll down to see it. You also need to register for free. -------------------- Kevin Korell OTOL Board Leader Howell, NJ |

I've been a Bob Hope fan for a long time -- particularly as I'm a military retiree. I think this sort of thing is a great honor and well deserved.
BUT (there always seems to be a BUT), will rail passengers in Kenosha WI (etc.) really understand where this rail stop is, with no associated geographical name? After all, Orange County CA was smart enough to call their airport "John Wayne Airport Orange County" -- why not call the Burbank airport, and rail stop, something like "Bob Hope Burbank" or "Burbank Bob Hope"? Or am I picking nits? The L.A. Times story on this is here. BTW, plenty of other stuff out here in LA LA Land is named for Bob Hope -- including a major street in Burbank which is in between the NBC Studios and Johnny Carson Park. -------------------- Regards, HaRRy, San Diego

But I hoping that both AMTRAK and Metrolink will put something in their timetables, perhaps the Burbank Airport name in parentheses so that rail passengers know that this station is for Bob Hope Airport, which used to be Burbank Airport. You're lucky anyhow that the name "Bob Hope" has only a total of 7 letters. Things should fit nicely on the timetables. I shudder to think about them naming something (including its adjacent rail station) for your Governor-Elect !!! -------------------- Kevin Korell OTOL Board Leader Howell, NJ |
