Clifton: Continued deterioration could mean loss of bldg.
The historic building at the Matawan train station will be getting some TLC from NJ Transit.
"The station exterior needs immediate work, so we will be stabilizing the building," said NJ Transit spokesman Joe Dee. "We are going to be doing work that will prevent what could be costly weather damage."

The good news - critical structural stabilization work will be accomplished to prevent further deterioration and loss of this beautiful 130+ year old structure.
The bad news - the "sagging apron canopy" will be removed. This architectural feature is part of this stations "character." I hope it is reinstalled during a future restoration.

The old building hasn't been in use, at least not as a train station, since the platforms were improved when the North Jersey Coast Line was electrified. So the sagging station canopy does not really serve any purpose, as it is not close enough to the two tracks to serve as a shelter from the elements. Plus, the depot is on the west side of the tracks, which normally serves Long Branch/Bay Head bound passengers. New York/Newark/Hoboken passengers board on the other side.
