The only bar in the world where you can buy model trains

When my youngest daughter was nine years old, she asked for an electric train as a birthday present. We lived, at the time, on Markham Street in Toronto, and we built a railroad in the basement. We called it the Markham and Pacific, following the example of many a hopeful 19thcentury railroad.

As any model railroader knows, the first thing you have to do when you move to a new town and rebuild your railroad is locate a good hobby store. The Chicago Yellow Pages listed a few, and the nearest one to downtown was Zientek's Trains.

I asked her for a beer, which seemed the right thing to do, and when she opened the bottle for me, I enquired about Zientek's Trains, suspecting that I would get a blank look. I didn't. "Upstairs," she said.
